Amikacin belongs to Aminoglycoside antibiotics class that is used to prevent or treat bacterial infections.
Uses
Amikacin is an antibiotic used to treat conditions such as serious infection by certain bacteria, including joint infection, intra-abdominal infections, pneumonia, and urinary tract infections.
Contraindications
When should one not use Amikacin
- A known allergy to any aminoglycoside
- You suffer from a disease called myasthenia gravis (severe weakness)
- If you have hearing difficulty, nerve problems or kidney problem
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Skin rash
- Cough
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Fever
- Headache
- Loss of balance
- Nausea, vomiting
- Low blood pressure
- Deafness
- Severe kidney failure
- Decrease in the number of red blood cells in the blood (anemia) or excessive amounts of the white blood cells known as Eosinophils in the blood (eosinophilia)

- Have kidney problems
- You have hearing difficulties or tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears)
- Amikacin may cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) not to work well. Do not have any immunizations or vaccinations while using this medication unless your doctor advises you.
- Amikacin may cause kidney damage, hearing loss for the elderly population, or infants who are on a higher dose of Amikacin; hence, one has to be cautious while giving this medicine to elderly or infants.

Interactions with other medicines
It is essential to let your doctor know about all the medications you are taking. Medicines that may interact with Mikacin include Amphotericin B, Cephalosporin, Cisplatin, Cyclosporine, Diuretics like Furosemide, and Ethacrynic Acid, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen, other Aminoglycosides and can increase the risk of kidney damage or hearing loss.
Dosage
Overdose
Overdose of Amikacin cause severe kidney damage, after which the patient may need to be on lifelong peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis.
Missed a Dose
If you have missed an Amikacin regular dose, then call your doctor and fix up an appointment as soon as you can. It is not advisable to miss a dose of antibiotics. It may lead to antibiotic resistance.
