Medical Description
Valgan tablet is an antiviral medication that contains the active ingredient valganciclovir. It is primarily used for the treatment and prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems. It belongs to a class of antiviral agents that work by inhibiting viral replication. Once ingested, valganciclovir is converted into ganciclovir, its active form, which then interferes with the DNA synthesis of the CMV virus, preventing it from multiplying and causing further infection.
Valgan tablet is used to treat CMV retinitis, a viral infection of the retina that can lead to blindness, in adult patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is used for both the induction and maintenance phases of therapy to manage this condition. It is also used to prevent CMV disease in individuals who have received a solid organ transplant. This preventive use is specifically for CMV-negative recipients who have received an organ from a CMV-positive donor, reducing the risk of a new infection.
The Valgan tablet works by preventing cytomegalovirus (CMV) from replicating. Once you take the tablet, your body turns the main ingredient, valganciclovir, into another substance called ganciclovir. This ganciclovir then gets activated inside the cells that are infected with the virus. It acts like a decoy, tricking the virus's machinery, called viral DNA polymerase, into using it instead of the correct building blocks. This completely stops the virus from building new DNA, which means it can't multiply or spread to other healthy cells. By doing this, Valgan helps stop the CMV infection from spreading.
Valgan tablet is administered orally and should be taken as directed by a physician. It is important to swallow the tablet whole with water and not to crush, break, or chew it. The medication can be taken with or without food, though taking it with meals may enhance its absorption. Adherence to a regular dosing schedule is crucial for optimal treatment outcomes. Patients should also be aware of potential side effects, such as low blood cell counts, which may require regular monitoring by a healthcare professional.
