Molecule Description
Valganciclovir is an antiviral medication. It is primarily used for the treatment and prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems. It belongs to a class of antiviral agents that work by inhibiting viral replication. Once ingested, valganciclovir is converted into ganciclovir, its active form, which then interferes with the DNA synthesis of the CMV virus, preventing it from multiplying and causing further infection.
Valganciclovir is used to treat CMV retinitis, a viral infection of the retina that can lead to blindness, in adult patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is used for both the induction and maintenance phases of therapy to manage this condition. It is also used to prevent CMV disease in individuals who have received a solid organ transplant. This preventive use is specifically for CMV-negative recipients who have received an organ from a CMV-positive donor, reducing the risk of a new infection.
Valganciclovir is administered orally and should be taken as directed by a physician. Take it with water exactly as directed. If you are using tablets, do not crush, break or chew them. The medication can be taken with or without food, though taking it with meals may enhance its absorption. Adherence to a regular dosing schedule is crucial for optimal treatment outcomes. Patients should also be aware of potential side effects, such as low blood cell counts, which may require regular monitoring by a healthcare professional.
Uses
Valganciclovir is indicated for the induction and maintenance therapy of potentially blinding viral infection of the retina (Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis) in adult patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Valganciclovir is indicated for the prevention of CMV disease in CMV-negative adults and children (aged from birth to 18 years) who have received a solid organ transplant from a CMV-positive donor.
Contraindications
When should one not use Valganciclovir
- If you have hypersensitivity to the active substance, ganciclovir, or any other ingredients of Valganciclovir.

Other General Warnings
Talk to your doctor if
- You have low white blood cells, low red blood cells, and low platelets. Valganciclovir may cause cancer, harm developing babies, and affect sperm production.
- You have trouble with fertility. Using Valganciclovir can stop the production of sperm, which can lead to infertility. These effects can go away if you use lower doses, but they may be permanent with higher doses.
- You should use effective contraception during treatment if you are of childbearing age.
- You must strictly adhere to dosage recommendations to avoid overdose.
- You have impaired kidney function, so you need to adjust the dosage of Valganciclovir. Since Valganciclovir is removed from your body by the kidneys, it's important that your kidneys work well for it to be cleared properly.
Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Valganciclovir belongs to a class of medicines that inhibit virus growth. Once inside the body, it converts into ganciclovir, which prevents cytomegalovirus (CMV) from multiplying and infecting healthy cells.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Zidovudine and Valganciclovir can both lead to lower blood cell counts, which may cause conditions like neutropenia (low white blood cells) and anaemia (low red blood cells). Some patients might not be able to take these medications together at their full strength without experiencing side effects. Consult your doctor and inform him/her about all the medications you are taking.
- If you are taking probenecid along with Valganciclovir, your healthcare provider should check for signs of toxicity, they will look for any harmful effects from the concomitant use of Valganciclovir and probenecid.
- For those taking Mycophenolate Mofetil, special care is needed if you have kidney issues, as the levels of this medication and its byproducts may rise, potentially leading to more side effects.
- Patients should be observed closely for signs of toxicity from the use of didanosine, which can also occur alongside Valganciclovir treatment.
Interactions with food items
You should take Valganciclovir with meals to help your body absorb it better.
Dosage
Overdose
Taking too much of Valganciclovir can lead to serious health problems, including low blood cell counts (pancytopenia and neutropenia), blood in urine (haematuria), kidney failure (especially if you already have kidney problems), high creatinine levels, stomach pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, shaking and seizures. If you notice any of these symptoms or think you have taken too much of Valganciclovir, get medical help right away. It's very important to follow the prescribed dosage to prevent an overdose.
Missed a Dose
If you miss a dose of Valganciclovir, then take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
