Medical Description

Tricaine AR oral gel is used to relieve heartburn, indigestion, acid reflux and related bloating. It contains a combination of sodium alginate, aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and simethicone. The antacids neutralise acid, sodium alginate forms a barrier that can limit reflux, and simethicone helps gas bubbles join and pass more easily. The gel is taken by mouth after shaking and measuring it with the supplied device. Frequent or severe symptoms need medical assessment.

How does this medicine work?

Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide neutralise acid already present in the stomach. Sodium alginate forms a raft-like barrier over stomach contents, which can reduce reflux into the food pipe. Simethicone lowers the surface tension of gas bubbles so they join and pass more easily.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Tricaine AR gel works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, antacids can reduce absorption of some antibiotics, thyroid medicines, iron supplements and other medicines, so follow a pharmacist's advice about separating them.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Large, spicy or fatty meals may worsen heartburn or reflux in some people, so avoid foods that trigger your symptoms.
