Medical Description

Trapex Tablet contains Lorazepam. Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine (BZD) medication commonly used for sedation, anxiety disorders, and epilepsy. There are many anxiety disorders like social phobia, specific phobias, generalised anxiety disorder, separation anxiety, panic attacks. In this, the person's fear or reaction is out of proportion to the given situation, hampers the person's daily life. Epilepsy is a condition in which the person experiences a seizure due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Lorazepam acts on gamma-amnio-butyric acid (GABA), a chemical mediator in the brain. Lorazepam increases the levels of GABA, which in turn relaxes the brain cells and helps in anxiety disorder, insomnia due to anxiety, epilepsy. It also relaxes tense muscles due to panic attacks. This medicine should be taken with or without food. One can swallow the tablet with water or dissolve in the water and then drink it. The doctor will decide the frequency and duration of the medicine as per the age and severity of the patient. One should not increase or decrease the dose on their own as this can have serious complications. This is a habit-forming medicine; hence has to be taken under supervision. Preferably take the medicine at night.

Pregnancy

It is pregnancy category D medicine. This medicine should not be taken during the first and third trimesters. There are cases with cleft palate and cleft lip in females under lorazepam treatment during pregnancy. Few newborns also showed withdrawal symptoms. Hence, if this medicine is used during pregnancy, it has to be used with caution and only if the benefits outweigh the risk.

Breast Feeding

Lorazepam is found in mother's milk but in lower quantities. Studies show that it does not cause adverse reactions in breastfed babies with the standard dose given to mothers; lorazepam seems to be safer than other psychotropic medications used in lactating women.

Driving

You should not drive if you have taken a Trapex Tablet because this medicine induces dizziness, drowsiness, and sleep on consumption. This can increase the tendency of accidents post-consumption.

Alcohol

One should not consume alcohol with Trapex Tablet. In fact, this medicine is contraindicated in alcohol addicts. Overdoses related to alcohol and lorazepam have a higher fatality risk, including death.

Storage and disposal

Store the medicine at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from heat and humidity. Keep out of reach of children. If there is leftover Trapex Tablet after completing the recommended course, dispose of them safely to avoid accidental usage by children, pets, or other people. Do not flush in the toilet.

Lorazepam is a Schedule IV drug, and patients may develop dependence and tolerance with long-term use. Hence, using the lowest possible effective dose for the shortest period is recommended. To avoid withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, headache doctors recommend tapering the dose slowly before stopping the medicine completely.

Missed a Dose

Trapex Tablet should be taken according to the dose and the time advised by the doctor. It is preferable to take the medication at night. If you have forgotten to take a dose and recall within a short while of missing it, you can take it. But you should not take it if you recall after a long gap. Do not double the number of Trapex Tablets to compensate for the missed dose. Taking a double dose may cause serious side effects.

  • Antiepileptics like sodium valproate and carbamazepine
  • Muscle relaxants like diazepam and cyclobenzaprine.

Interactions with food items

  • Grapefruit or juice should not be consumed with this medicine as side effects like headache, nausea and vomiting can be experienced.
