Medical Description

MIGRANECK is a medicine used for the short-term relief of a migraine attack. It contains ergotamine and caffeine, which act together to narrow enlarged blood vessels and ease migraine symptoms.

Uses

  • Migraine attack relief

Contraindications

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, are pregnant or may become pregnant, or have coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, poor circulation, severe liver or kidney disease, or sepsis. Do not use it with potent medicines that slow ergotamine breakdown, including certain macrolide antibiotics, antifungal medicines, and antiviral medicines. It must not be combined with another ergot medicine or other medicine that narrows blood vessels.

Side effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Tingling
  • Muscle pain

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use this medicine during pregnancy. Ergotamine can reduce blood flow to the womb and can cause harmful womb contractions. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Ergotamine may reduce milk production and may affect a breastfed infant. Do not use while breastfeeding unless your doctor gives specific advice.

Driving

Driving

Dizziness or visual changes can affect driving. Do not drive until you know how this medicine affects you.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol if it worsens your headache or dizziness. Ask your doctor before drinking alcohol while using this medicine.

Directions for Use

Take the tablet as a whole with sufficient water. Use it only as directed by your doctor and do not exceed the prescribed amount. It is intended for a migraine attack, not for preventing frequent headaches.

Storage and disposal

Store in the original pack in a cool, dry place away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep out of reach of children. Dispose of unused tablets safely and do not share them.

Quick Tips

  • Use this medicine only for migraine attacks as advised.
  • Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe limb pain, numbness, or colour changes.
  • Avoid smoking because it can further narrow blood vessels.
  • Keep a record of headache triggers and discuss frequent attacks with your doctor.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much may cause severe nausea, vomiting, cold or painful hands and feet, confusion, chest pain, or changes in vision. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

This medicine is usually used when needed, so a missed dose is uncommon. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ergotamine narrows blood vessels that become enlarged during a migraine. Caffeine helps support this action and may improve absorption of ergotamine.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way ergotamine and caffeine work and may increase the risk of dangerous narrowing of blood vessels. Tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use. In particular, if you are taking other migraine or ergot medicines, certain antibiotics, antifungal medicines, medicines for human immunodeficiency virus infection, or medicines that affect liver enzymes, ask your doctor before use.

Interactions with food items

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may increase the effects of ergotamine. Avoid them unless your doctor says they are suitable.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

It is intended for relief during an attack and is not usually used as a preventive treatment. Ask your doctor about preventive options if attacks are frequent.
