Medical Description

Methirox tablet is used to treat an overactive thyroid gland, a condition in which the thyroid makes more hormone than the body needs. It contains methimazole, which slows the thyroid gland's production of new thyroid hormones. As hormone levels improve, symptoms such as a fast heartbeat, sweating, shaking and unplanned weight loss may ease. Methirox tablet is taken by mouth and requires medical follow-up with thyroid blood tests.

Uses

  • Overactive thyroid: Methimazole reduces excess thyroid hormone that can cause a fast heartbeat, shaking, sweating and unplanned weight loss.

Storage and disposal

Store Methirox tablet in a tightly closed container below 30 degrees Celsius, protected from light and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children. Dispose of expired tablets safely according to local guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Take Methirox exactly as prescribed and attend thyroid blood-test appointments.
  • Do not stop treatment without speaking with your doctor unless you develop an urgent warning symptom.
  • Report fever, sore throat or mouth ulcers urgently.
  • Seek urgent care for yellow eyes, dark urine, pale stools or upper stomach pain.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much methimazole may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, headache, fever, joint pain, itching or swelling. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Methimazole slows the thyroid gland's production of new thyroid hormones. As hormone levels come down, symptoms caused by an overactive thyroid may gradually improve. Blood tests help your doctor check thyroid hormone levels and adjust treatment safely.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Methirox works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention warfarin and other blood-thinning medicines, theophylline, digoxin, propranolol, sotalol and any other thyroid treatment. Warfarin may need closer clotting checks as thyroid control changes. Theophylline and digoxin may need monitoring because their effects can change as thyroid hormone levels improve. Propranolol and sotalol also require medical review during thyroid treatment.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known.
