Medical Description
Mesna injection contains mesna, a synthetic compound used as a uroprotective agent. It acts in the urinary tract to neutralise toxic urothelial metabolites produced by oxazaphosphorine anticancer drugs such as ifosfamide and cyclophosphamide.
In the urine, it neutralises a harmful substance called acrolein, which can irritate the bladder and cause bleeding. This helps reduce the risk of chemotherapy-related bladder damage (haemorrhagic cystitis) without reducing the cancer-fighting effect of chemotherapy.
Common side effects of Mesna injection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, headache, tiredness, muscle or joint pain, rash, and itching.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction (such as a skin rash, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat), severe chest pain, trouble breathing, persistent dark or red urine, or severe dizziness and fainting.
Mesna injection is administered by healthcare professionals via intravenous (IV) injection, as specifically prescribed by your doctor, along with chemotherapy.
