Medical Description

Merobax Sb injection is used in hospitals to treat serious infections, such as complicated skin infections, abdominal infections, and meningitis, in children. It is only used when the infection is likely caused by bacteria that this medicine can fight, to prevent antibiotic resistance. Your doctor or nurse will administer this injection, so please do not attempt to use it yourself.

Meropenem works by breaking down the protective walls of bacteria, causing them to die. Sulbactam helps meropenem work better by blocking enzymes made by some bacteria that can destroy antibiotics. While sulbactam doesn’t work on its own, it boosts the overall effect of the treatment when combined.

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to meropenem, sulbactam, or any similar antibiotics like penicillin. Common side effects include injection site inflammation, nausea, diarrhoea, headache, or skin rash. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have kidney problems, seizures, or a history of allergic reactions.

Some medications, such as valproic acid and probenecid, can interact with how meropenem or sulbactam works. The medicine should be stored at a temperature below 25°C and kept away from light and heat. Since this injection is given by a healthcare professional, overdoses or missed doses are rare. Tell your doctor if you feel unwell, have severe diarrhoea, or develop new symptoms during or after treatment.

Uses

Merobax Sb injection is used to treat serious infections, including complex skin infections, severe abdominal (intra-abdominal) infections in both adults and children, and a type of brain infection called bacterial meningitis in children aged 3 months and older. To help preserve the effectiveness of this medicine in the future and prevent bacteria from becoming resistant, Merobax Sb injection should only be used when it is certain or very likely that the infection is caused by bacteria that this medicine can eliminate.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

  • Meropenem is a powerful antibiotic that kills bacteria responsible for serious infections. It works by preventing the bacteria from building their protective outer wall, which is essential for their survival. Without this wall, the bacteria break apart and die, aiding your body in fighting the infection more effectively.
  • Sulbactam is a medication that enhances the effectiveness of certain antibiotics by preventing bacteria from breaking them down. Some bacteria produce special enzymes that can render antibiotics ineffective, thereby reducing the effectiveness of treatment. Sulbactam blocks these enzymes, so the antibiotic can do its job and kill the bacteria. On its own, sulbactam doesn't treat infections, but when combined with other antibiotics, it helps treat tough bacterial infections more effectively.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Taking probenecid with meropenem can raise the level of meropenem in your blood, so using them together is not recommended.
  • If you are taking valproic acid (a seizure medicine), adding meropenem may lower its levels in your blood, which can raise the risk of having seizures. Extra seizure medicine may be needed if meropenem must be used.
  • Sulbactam may interact with a group of antibiotics called aminoglycosides (such as tobramycin, amikacin, and gentamicin), especially at high concentrations in laboratory studies. However, this interaction is unlikely to occur in the body at normal doses.
  • Taking sulbactam with probenecid can slow the rate at which sulbactam is eliminated from your body.
  • Some possible interactions reported with sulbactam may actually be due to the other antibiotic it's combined with, rather than sulbactam itself.
