It relaxes the smooth muscles of the airways relieving the spasm and thins the mucous and makes it easier to cough out there by relieving cough, spasm and congestion. This medicine needs to be taken as directed by the doctor. You should not stop taking this medicine on your own even if you feel better after taking it for a few days.
