  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
  • It has been observed that taking levetiracetam and methotrexate together reduces methotrexate clearance, resulting in higher/longer blood methotrexate concentrations that are potentially hazardous.
  • Co-administration of levetiracetam and a laxative called macrogol may decrease the efficacy of levetiracetam. Hence, use macrogol one hour before or after using levetiracetam.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Levipil 1g Tablet is used to control epileptic seizures. It is prescribed on its own or alongside other anti-epileptic medicines for seizures that begin in one part of the brain, for the sudden muscle jerks of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, and for generalised tonic-clonic seizures involving the whole body.
Most older anti-epileptics act on sodium or calcium channels in nerve membranes. Levetiracetam works through a different target altogether, a protein on the synaptic vesicles called SV2A. It is also barely processed by the liver enzymes that cause so many interactions, which is why it combines more safely with other medicines than most epilepsy treatments.
Yes, and this is important to know. Irritability, agitation, anger, anxiety, low mood and, in some people, aggression are recognised effects and are more common in children and adolescents. They often appear in the first weeks. Tell your doctor promptly about any marked change in mood or behaviour, and seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm.
Never stop on your own. Suddenly stopping an anti-epileptic medicine can trigger seizures, including prolonged seizures that are a medical emergency. Being seizure-free means the treatment is working. If stopping is appropriate, your doctor will reduce the dose in careful steps over weeks or months.
Drowsiness, tiredness and dizziness are the most common effects, particularly in the first weeks and after each dose increase. They usually lessen as your body adjusts. Until they settle, avoid driving, swimming alone, working at heights and operating machinery.
Levetiracetam is not known to reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraception, which is a genuine advantage over medicines such as carbamazepine and phenytoin. Even so, discuss contraception with your doctor, particularly if you take more than one anti-epileptic medicine.
Routine measurement of drug levels is not usually needed. Your doctor will, however, check kidney function, because levetiracetam is cleared by the kidneys and the dose depends on how well they work, and may check blood counts if you develop unusual infections, bruising or bleeding.
Alcohol is best avoided. It adds considerably to the drowsiness and unsteadiness this medicine can cause, and both drinking and the disturbed sleep that follows can lower the seizure threshold and provoke a seizure.
Epilepsy in pregnancy needs specialist planning rather than a simple yes or no. Seizures themselves carry real risk to mother and baby, so treatment is usually continued. Levetiracetam is among the medicines often preferred in pregnancy, but the decision, the dose and folic acid supplementation must be arranged with your doctor before you conceive.
Mention kidney disease, liver disease, depression or any psychiatric illness, and any history of mood or behavioural problems. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, and list every other medicine you take.
Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is nearly due, skip the missed one and continue as usual. Do not take a double dose. Missed doses are one of the commonest reasons for breakthrough seizures, so use a pill box or an alarm if you tend to forget.
No, levetiracetam is not addictive and does not cause craving. It must still never be stopped abruptly, because the brain adapts to its presence and sudden withdrawal can provoke seizures.
