Medical Description

Ketomar tablet is an oral antihistamine used in children aged 3 years and older to help prevent asthma symptoms and relieve allergic rhinitis and hives when prescribed. It contains ketotifen fumarate, which reduces the effect of histamine, a chemical that causes many allergy symptoms. It also helps stabilise allergy cells so they release fewer inflammatory substances, which can reduce allergic symptoms and the frequency or severity of asthma symptoms over time. Ketomar tablet is taken by mouth with food and is not a rescue medicine for a sudden asthma attack. Children younger than 3 years should use it only under direct medical guidance.

Uses

  • Asthma prevention: Regular preventive treatment can reduce how often breathing symptoms occur and lessen their impact, but it cannot relieve a sudden attack.
  • Hives: Ketomar tablet may ease itching and raised, swollen patches, helping reduce discomfort during allergic skin reactions.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Ketomar tablet is not a rescue medicine for a sudden asthma attack. Safety and effectiveness in children younger than 3 years have not been established, so use in this age group only under direct medical guidance.

Side effects

  • Drowsiness: Ketotifen can cause sleepiness or reduced alertness, and children may be more sensitive when treatment begins. Avoid driving and seek help if the person is difficult to wake.
  • Weight gain: Some people may gain weight during prolonged oral use. Arrange a medical review if the increase is marked or unexplained.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or become pregnant while using Ketomar tablet. Use it only when your doctor considers the expected benefit appropriate.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Ketotifen can pass into breast milk, so use Ketomar tablet only after medical advice.

Driving

Driving

Ketomar tablet can cause drowsiness or reduced alertness. Do not drive, cycle or operate machinery if you feel sleepy or less alert.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol because it can increase drowsiness and impair alertness while using Ketomar tablet.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water and with food. Do not chew, crush or break the tablet. Use Ketomar tablet exactly as advised. It is for prevention, not sudden breathing difficulty; use the rescue medicine prescribed by your doctor for an acute attack.

Storage and disposal

Store Ketomar tablet at room temperature below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children. Do not use tablets after the expiry date. Dispose of unused medicine safely and do not share it with another person.

Quick Tips

  • Ketomar tablet helps prevent symptoms and is not a substitute for a fast-acting rescue inhaler.
  • Give the tablet with food to reduce stomach upset.
  • Watch children closely for sleepiness, especially when treatment begins.
  • Avoid driving or activities needing alertness until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Continue any other asthma treatment unless your doctor tells you to change it.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much ketotifen may cause marked drowsiness, confusion, dizziness, fast heartbeat or seizures, especially in children. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ketotifen fumarate blocks histamine, a chemical that causes itching, swelling, sneezing and other allergy symptoms. It also helps stabilise allergy cells so they release fewer inflammatory substances. This preventive action can reduce allergic symptoms and asthma flare-ups over time, but it does not directly open narrowed airways during an acute attack.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Ketomar tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, sleeping medicines, sedatives, other medicines that cause drowsiness and other antihistamines may increase sleepiness. Oral medicines for diabetes may increase the risk of low blood platelets with ketotifen, so this combination should be avoided unless your doctor specifically manages it.

Interactions with food items

Alcohol can add to ketotifen-related drowsiness. Avoid alcohol while using Ketomar tablet.
