Medical Description

Keeclox L tablet is an antibiotic combination used for certain bacterial infections, including selected infections of the respiratory tract and skin or soft tissues when prescribed. It contains amoxicillin and cloxacillin, which stop susceptible bacteria from building the protective cell wall they need to survive, along with lactobacillus sporogenes, a probiotic microorganism included in the formulation. The antibiotics act on bacteria, while the probiotic is intended to support the balance of intestinal microorganisms during treatment. The tablet is taken by mouth and should be used only when a clinician has selected it for a bacterial infection.

Uses

  • Respiratory tract infections: Selected throat, airway or lung infections caused by susceptible bacteria may improve when this combination is prescribed after medical assessment.
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections: Certain bacterial infections affecting the skin or tissues beneath it may respond to this combination after a clinician confirms the need for treatment.
  • Urinary tract infections: Amoxicillin may be selected for some infections affecting the urinary system when examination or testing supports its use.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, penicillin medicines or related cephalosporin antibiotics, do not use it. Do not use this medicine if a penicillin previously caused jaundice or a serious liver problem. Tell your doctor before use if you have kidney disease, liver disease, glandular fever or bowel inflammation.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Amoxicillin and cloxacillin can disturb usual bowel bacteria, causing loose stools. Get urgent medical advice for severe or bloody diarrhoea or marked abdominal pain.
  • Nausea: Either antibiotic may irritate the stomach and cause queasiness, especially early in treatment. Contact a clinician if vomiting prevents you keeping the tablet down.
  • Vomiting: The antibiotics can trigger stomach irritation and vomiting. Seek advice if you cannot keep fluids down or signs of dehydration appear.
  • Skin rash: Amoxicillin can cause an itchy or spreading rash. Stop and contact a clinician promptly, especially if fever or facial swelling develops.
  • Thrush: Changes in normal body bacteria can allow soreness or white patches in the mouth or genital area. Ask a clinician if these symptoms appear.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Use Keeclox L tablet during pregnancy only when the clinician treating you considers the antibiotic necessary.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Amoxicillin and cloxacillin may pass into breast milk in small amounts. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding and report diarrhoea, thrush or rash in the baby.

Driving

Driving

Keeclox L tablet is not expected to affect driving, but do not drive if you feel dizzy, weak or unwell.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific alcohol interaction is known. Avoid alcohol if it worsens nausea, dizziness or other symptoms while using Keeclox L tablet.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Follow your clinician's instructions about food, because food can affect cloxacillin absorption. Do not crush or chew the tablet unless advised. Use it only for the infection selected by your clinician and do not share it.

Storage and disposal

Store Keeclox L in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of sight and reach of children. Do not use tablets after the expiry date. Dispose of unused tablets through an approved medicine-disposal route.

Quick Tips

  • Use Keeclox L tablet only for a bacterial infection selected by your doctor.
  • Do not use leftover antibiotics or give this tablet to another person.
  • Tell your doctor about any previous reaction to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Seek urgent help for severe diarrhoea, a spreading rash, facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
  • Do not rely on Keeclox L tablet for a common cold or another viral illness.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much of this medicine may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or seizures, especially in people with kidney problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Amoxicillin and cloxacillin stop susceptible bacteria from building a protective cell wall, so the bacteria cannot grow normally and the infection can clear. Lactobacillus sporogenes is a probiotic microorganism included to support the balance of normal intestinal microorganisms during antibiotic treatment.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Keeclox L tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, blood thinners such as warfarin may need monitoring, methotrexate toxicity may increase, probenecid can raise antibiotic levels, and allopurinol may increase the risk of a rash. Tell your doctor about other antibiotics and hormonal contraceptives; severe vomiting or diarrhoea can reduce contraceptive absorption.

Interactions with food items

Food can affect cloxacillin absorption. Follow your clinician's instructions about whether Keeclox L tablet should be taken with food.
