Medical Description

Granicip injection contains granisetron, a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. It exerts antiemetic action by competitively blocking 5-HT3 receptors on nerves in the gastrointestinal tract and in the brain.

Granicip injection is widely used to help prevent and manage severe nausea and vomiting induced by cancer therapies. It blocks signalling pathways that trigger nausea and vomiting following radiation or chemotherapy.

Granicip injection is administered by healthcare professionals via intravenous (IV) push or IV infusion, usually shortly before chemotherapy or radiotherapy as directed by the doctor.

Uses

Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy Induced Nausea and Vomiting

Granicip injection should not be used if
  • you have a known severe hypersensitivity or systemic allergic reaction to granisetron or other inactive ingredients in the solution.

Dosage

Overdose

Because Granicip injection is administered by healthcare professionals, accidental overdose is uncommon. If an overdose is suspected, appropriate medical assessment and supportive treatment should be provided. There is no specific antidote for granisetron overdose.

Missed a Dose

Because Granicip injection is administered in a medical facility, missing a dose is unlikely. If you delay a dose, inform your clinical oncology team.

How does this medicine work?

Cytotoxic chemotherapy and radiation release serotonin (5-HT) from the cells in the small intestine. This sends signals to the brain to trigger nausea and vomiting.Granicip injection selectively binds to and blocks these 5-HT3 receptors in both the gut and brain and helps reduce nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Serotonergic medicines (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, Tramadol): Co-administration may increase the risk of developing serotonin syndrome. Inform your doctor if you take these medicines.
  • Apomorphine: Granisetron should not be used with apomorphine because this combination has been associated with severe hypotension and loss of consciousness.
  • Medicines affecting heart rhythm: Tell your doctor if you take medicines that can prolong the QT interval, as they may increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Inform your physician about all ongoing prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products.

Interactions with food items

Since Granicip injection is administered intravenously, food and beverage intake do not affect drug absorption.
