Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Medicines used to prevent pain during surgery, such as anaesthetic medicines, may have enhanced effects with Fluanxol. This requires adjustment of the dose of anaesthetic medicines.
- Fluanxol increases the effect of the medicines used to treat blood clots, such as warfarin, heparin and apixaban. This may need a reduction in the dosage of these medicines.
- Medicines used to treat mania in bipolar disorder, such as lithium, may cause harm to the nerves when given along with Fluanxol.
- Medicines used to treat high blood pressure such as hydralazine, doxazosin and methyldopa may enhance blood pressure control when taken along with Fluanxol. Fluanxol reverses the blood pressure-lowering effect of other medicines such as clonidine and guanethidine. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and adjusting the dose of these medicines help avoid adverse reactions.
- Fluanxol increases the response of the medication used for treating seizures, such as carbamazepine, which can stabilise the dose.
- Medicines used to treat irregular heartbeats such as quinidine and amiodarone may produce exaggerated responses in heart conditions when given with Fluanxol.
- Medicines used to treat parkinsonism, such as levodopa, may cause more side effects such as abnormal movements and shakiness when given with Fluanxol.
- Medicines given to treat allergy, cold or vomiting may cause mouth dryness and abnormal movements when given with Fluanxol.
- Medicines used to treat infections like erythromycin and moxifloxacin may cause changes in the heart rhythm.
- Medicine used to treat diabetes may be less effective in controlling blood sugar levels when given with Fluanxol.
Interactions with food items
- You can take your usual food unless your doctor has given you instructions about the diet.
