Floxin is a prescription medication that is used in the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. Its main content is fluoxetine. It is also commonly used to treat obsessive-compulsive disord
er (OCD), bulimia, binge-eating disorders, and pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Depression is a medical condition in which patients experience several changes that affect the mood and personality. This can affect daily activities and might lead to a loss of interest and low motivation. These changes are suggested to be linked to changes in the levels of certain chemical substances in the brain, such as serotonin and dopamine. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a debilitating condition with repetitive thoughts and an overwhelming need to perform certain actions. The medication should only be taken as recommended by the doctor. It should not be abruptly started or stopped, as it may cause withdrawal effects. Taking the tablet at the same time every day is advisable for maximum efficacy.

Contraindications of Floxin 40 MG
You are hypersensitive to Floxin or its components.
You have a history of increased negative thoughts, low mood, or suicidal ideation.
You are an elderly patient.
You have liver disorders.

Pregnancy

Breast Feeding

Mode of Action of Floxin 40 MG
How Does It Work?
Floxin primarily acts on a chemical messenger in the brain called Serotonin. Serotonin plays a vital role in regulating mood and personality. This chemical is present in lesser amounts in patients with depression.
Floxin helps increase the levels of serotonin in certain sections of the brain. It is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).
The higher levels of serotonin also help in the management of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. It also has some effects on other neurotransmitters such as dopamine and noradrenaline.
It is important to note that Fluoxetine as a medication requires about four weeks of continued use for the optimal onset of action to begin....
Directions for Use of Floxin 40 MG
- This medication should be taken as prescribed by the treating physician.
- It is recommended to take this medication on a regular schedule, i.e., at the same time every day, for optimal pharmacological effects of this medication.
- Swallow this medication as a whole. Do not crush, chew or break this tablet.
- It is recommended to finish the full course of Floxin as prescribed by your treating doctor. Abrupt stoppage of the medicine can cause withdrawal side effects. Therefore, consult your doctor before stopping this medication....
Interactions of Floxin 40 MG
Interactions with other medicines
- It should not be mixed with blood thinners, such as aspirin, NSAIDs, heparin, warfarin, and other anticoagulants, as Floxin in itself affects blood clotting. This can cause bruising, nose bleeds, or internal bleeding....
- This drug should not be used along with or within two weeks of using Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as Isocarboxid etc. This is because it may cause a potentially fatal condition, serotonin syndrome....
- The use of Fluoxetine with thioridazine, pimozide, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors, including linezolid or methylene blue, is also contraindicated.

Storage and disposal of Floxin 40 MG
Store in a cool and dry place away from direct light and moisture. Do not use the medicine after the date of expiration. Keep the tablets away from children and pets. Do not flush the medication down the toilet. Dispose of it with biomedical waste only....
Dosage of Floxin 40 MG
Overdose
Floxin is not usually fatal if taken alone, even in an overdose. However, when taken with alcohol, it may cause ataxia (loss of muscle coordination) and respiratory depression (slowed breathing rate). In addition, the medicine may cause serotonin syndrome (symptoms include tremors, muscle rigidity, and elevated heart rate and body temperature) when taken in excessive amounts or if combined with other agents that also increase serotonin levels.
In case of a suspected overdose, rush the patient to a tertiary care hospital for appropriate intervention and treatment....
Missed a Dose
If you miss a dose of this tablet, take it as soon as possible. If the duration missed is too long, and it is almost time for the next dose, it is recommended to skip the missed dose and return to the regular schedule. Don’t double the dose of the tablet....

Q: I was taking Floxin for some mood changes. I missed my follow up, so I stopped the tablet three days back. Now I feel my anxiety and mood swings have returned. What do I do?
A: Stopping the Floxin tablet suddenly can result in withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, restlessness, or irritability. It is not advisable to stop the tablet without consulting your doctor.
Q: Since I started taking this Floxin tablet, I don’t sleep properly at night. I am very restless, and I get strange dreams. Does this mean the tablet is not suiting me?
A: Insomnia, difficulty in falling asleep and abnormal dreams are all common side effects of Floxin. The tablet should not be stopped because of this. Consult your doctor regarding any side effects.
