Medical Description

Ezamed tablet is a combination medicine used to treat susceptible bacterial infections of the chest, throat, nose, ears, skin, or soft tissues. It contains azithromycin, which stops susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for growth, and lactic acid bacillus, a probiotic component included to support intestinal flora during treatment. This medicine does not treat viral illnesses and is not suitable for every bacterial infection. Ezamed tablet is swallowed whole with sufficient water under prescription, and the chosen treatment should not be shared or reused for another illness.

Uses

  • Chest, throat, or nasal bacterial infections: Azithromycin can treat susceptible infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, sore throat, or sinusitis.
  • Ear bacterial infections: Ezamed tablet may be used for a susceptible bacterial ear infection when the prescriber selects this antibiotic.
  • Skin and soft-tissue bacterial infections: The tablet may treat susceptible infections such as an abscess or boil after clinical assessment.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use it if you have had a serious reaction to azithromycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, another macrolide antibiotic, or a ketolide. Tell your doctor if you have a history of cholestatic jaundice or other liver dysfunction. Children below the weight limit specified for this tablet should use a suitable formulation selected by a clinician.

Side effects

  • Stomach cramps: Azithromycin can irritate the digestive tract and cause cramping. Seek medical advice if pain becomes severe or persistent.
  • Nausea: Nausea may occur during treatment and can be accompanied by vomiting. Contact a clinician if fluids cannot be kept down.
  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotics can disturb normal bowel bacteria and cause loose stools. Severe or prolonged diarrhoea needs prompt medical assessment.
  • Dizziness or headache: These symptoms can occur during treatment. Avoid driving if dizzy and report severe or persistent headache.
  • Skin rash or itching: A mild rash may occur, but widespread rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty requires emergency medical help.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or trying to conceive. Use Ezamed tablet during pregnancy only if the clinician considers it clearly necessary.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Ask whether azithromycin and the probiotic component are suitable for you and the infant.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive or use machinery if you feel dizzy, have visual disturbance, or feel less alert.

Directions for Use

Take the Ezamed tablet as a whole with sufficient water and follow the instructions given by your prescriber or pharmacist. Taking it with food may reduce stomach upset if your clinician permits. Do not crush or chew it unless advised, and do not share or save tablets for another illness.

Storage and disposal

Keep Ezamed tablet in its original pack, protected from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it out of reach of children. Do not use an expired or damaged product, and ask a pharmacist about safe disposal.

Quick Tips

  • Use Ezamed tablet only for the bacterial infection identified by the prescriber.
  • Tell the prescriber about previous macrolide reactions, liver problems, and heart-rhythm problems.
  • Give a complete list of medicines, supplements, and herbal products before treatment.
  • Do not use leftover tablets for a later illness or give them to another person.
  • Contact the prescriber if symptoms worsen, fail to improve, or return.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much may cause severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, or heart-rhythm problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Azithromycin blocks bacterial protein production, which stops susceptible bacteria from growing and allows the body's defences to clear the infection. Lactic acid bacillus is included as a probiotic component that may support intestinal flora during antibiotic treatment. The combination does not treat viral illnesses.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Ezamed works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention ergotamine, warfarin, ciclosporin, antacids, medicines that affect heart rhythm, and every other antibiotic. Azithromycin can increase ergot-related toxicity, alter the effect of warfarin, change ciclosporin levels, and increase heart-rhythm risk with susceptible medicines.

Interactions with food items

Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium can reduce azithromycin absorption if taken together. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate them, and tell them about all supplements and drinks you use.
