Medical Description

Exicef tablet is an antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections affecting the lungs, throat, sinuses, ears, urinary tract and skin. Its active ingredient is cefpodoxime proxetil, which belongs to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics. It stops susceptible bacteria from building the protective cell wall they need to survive, allowing the body's immune system to clear the infection. Exicef tablet is taken by mouth as a whole with water and with food as directed. It does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or flu.

How does this medicine work?

Cefpodoxime proxetil blocks the formation of the protective cell wall surrounding susceptible bacteria. Without a stable wall, the bacteria weaken and die, allowing the body to clear the infection. It has no useful effect against viruses.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Exicef works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, antacids and acid-reducing medicines can lower cefpodoxime absorption; probenecid can increase cefpodoxime levels and side effects; and warfarin or other blood thinners may increase bleeding risk.

Interactions with food items

Take Exicef tablet with food as directed because food supports absorption. Dairy products may reduce cefpodoxime absorption according to the product information, so ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate them from the tablet.
