Medical Description

Emex injection is used to relieve nausea and vomiting, including after surgery and with migraine. It contains prochlorperazine, which blocks dopamine, a chemical messenger involved in the brain's vomiting signals. This reduces nausea and vomiting, but the same action can affect alertness, blood pressure and muscle movements. Emex injection is given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, usually as a deep injection into a muscle, and must not be self-injected.

Uses

  • Nausea and vomiting: Prochlorperazine reduces brain signals that trigger nausea and vomiting from several causes.
  • Postoperative nausea: Emex injection may control nausea and vomiting after an operation when given under medical supervision.
  • Migraine-associated nausea: It can relieve nausea that occurs with migraine when prescribed and administered by a healthcare professional.

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive Emex injection. Do not receive it if you are unconscious or have severely reduced alertness, serious blood disorders, severe liver disease or certain movement disorders unless a specialist advises it. Tell the doctor if you have epilepsy, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, heart rhythm problems or breathing disease.

Side effects

  • Drowsiness: Prochlorperazine can slow brain activity and make you sleepy; do not drive and seek help if you are difficult to wake.
  • Low blood pressure: Dizziness or faintness may occur when standing; remain seated or lying down and tell the nurse if you feel faint.
  • Movement problems: Muscle stiffness, unusual facial movements, restlessness or spasms need prompt medical attention.
  • Dry mouth or nasal stuffiness: The medicine can reduce saliva or congest the nose; seek advice if swallowing or breathing becomes difficult.
  • Serious allergic reaction: Swelling of the face, lips or throat or breathing difficulty requires emergency medical help immediately.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or trying to conceive. Emex injection should be used during pregnancy only when the doctor considers it necessary.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Prochlorperazine may pass into breast milk, so the doctor will weigh the benefits and risks before giving the injection.

Driving

Driving

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It is usually given as a deep intramuscular injection, and the healthcare professional will monitor you after administration.

Storage and disposal

Emex injection must be stored and handled by the hospital or clinic according to its pack instructions. Do not use a damaged, cloudy or particle-containing solution. The healthcare facility must dispose of unused medicine safely.

Quick Tips

  • Remain seated or lying down if you feel dizzy after the injection.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you are fully alert.
  • Tell the doctor about heart, seizure, liver, eye, prostate or breathing conditions.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause severe sleepiness, low blood pressure, movement problems, seizures, breathing difficulty or heart rhythm changes. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Prochlorperazine blocks dopamine, a chemical messenger involved in the brain signals that control nausea and vomiting. By reducing these signals, it helps settle the vomiting centre. Its action on other brain areas can also affect alertness, blood pressure and muscle movement.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Emex injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention sedatives, sleeping medicines, barbiturates, antidepressants, levodopa or other Parkinson's medicines, seizure medicines, medicines affecting heart rhythm, blood-pressure medicines, diabetes medicines, anticholinergic medicines, stimulants, adrenaline, certain cancer treatments and antibiotics. Sedatives can increase sleepiness and slowed breathing, while heart-rhythm medicines can increase rhythm risk, blood-pressure medicines can worsen faintness, and levodopa may have a reduced effect.

Interactions with food items

Avoid alcohol because it can increase sleepiness, dizziness, low blood pressure and slowed breathing. Tell the doctor about your usual alcohol intake.
