Medical Description

Elips cream is used on the anal area to relieve pain from anal fissures and support healing of the affected tissue. It contains a combination of sucralfate, metronidazole and lignocaine hydrochloride. Sucralfate forms a protective covering that supports tissue repair, metronidazole acts against certain bacteria that grow without oxygen, and lignocaine hydrochloride is a local anaesthetic that numbs pain signals. Elips cream is for external use only and is applied to the cleaned, dry affected area as directed by your doctor.

Uses

  • Anal fissures: Protects the painful tear, reduces local pain and helps control bacterial growth while the affected tissue heals.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not apply Elips cream to the eyes, mouth or areas unrelated to the anal fissure. Tell your doctor about a previous reaction to lignocaine, metronidazole or similar ingredients.

Side effects

  • Burning: A fissure can sting briefly when the cream touches the injured skin. Stop applying it and contact your doctor if burning becomes severe or persistent.
  • Tingling: Lignocaine can cause temporary numbness or tingling near the application site. Stop use if numbness spreads or affects movement.
  • Rash: Sensitivity to an ingredient may cause redness, itching or raised spots. Stop applying the cream and get medical advice if swelling develops.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Use Elips cream during pregnancy only if specifically advised.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Safety during breastfeeding is not well established. Ask your doctor before using Elips cream and prevent the infant from contacting treated skin.

Driving

Driving

Elips cream is unlikely to affect driving when used as directed. Do not drive if you develop dizziness or unusual numbness.

No direct alcohol interaction is known, but alcohol may worsen irritation or delay recovery from an anal fissure.

Directions for Use

For external use only. Wash your hands before and after application. Gently clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer of Elips cream as directed. Do not apply it to the eyes, mouth or unrelated skin, and do not wash the treated area immediately unless your doctor advises it.

Storage and disposal

Store Elips cream at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep it tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Quick Tips

  • Wash your hands before and after using Elips cream.
  • Keep the area clean and dry before application.
  • Do not scratch or rub the fissure after application.
  • Use the cream only on the affected anal area as directed.
  • Get medical advice if pain, bleeding or swelling is getting worse.

Dosage

Overdose

Using too much may increase numbness or irritation. If a large amount gets into the mouth or eyes by accident, rinse with water and contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one. Do not apply extra product to make up for it.

How does this medicine work?

Sucralfate coats the injured surface and supports tissue growth and repair. Metronidazole acts against certain bacteria that can grow without oxygen. Lignocaine hydrochloride reduces pain by temporarily numbing nearby nerve endings.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Elips cream works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention other creams for anal fissures, metronidazole-containing products and lignocaine or other local anaesthetic products, because combined use may increase irritation or unwanted absorption.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interactions are known for externally applied Elips cream.
