Medical Description

Deucef injection is an antibiotic medicine used for susceptible bacterial infections of the lungs, ears, urinary tract, skin, soft tissues, bones, joints, blood, heart and brain, and for preventing infection around some surgeries. It contains ceftizoxime, which stops susceptible bacteria from building the protective cell wall needed for survival. This allows the body's defenses to clear the infection. Deucef injection is given into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic and does not treat viral illnesses such as colds.

Uses

  • Serious bacterial infections: Infections affecting bones, joints, blood, heart or brain may require hospital treatment when testing shows the bacteria are susceptible.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use Deucef injection if you have previously had a severe reaction to ceftizoxime or another cephalosporin antibiotic. Tell your doctor about any penicillin allergy, kidney disease, bowel inflammation or severe diarrhoea after antibiotics.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Ceftizoxime may temporarily upset the stomach and cause queasiness. Tell the healthcare team if nausea prevents you from drinking or eating.
  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotics can disturb normal bowel bacteria and cause loose stools. Report severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea promptly.
  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation may lead to vomiting after the injection. Seek medical help if you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Injection-site reaction: Pain, redness or swelling may develop where the injection enters the body. Tell the nurse if the area becomes severe or spreads.
  • Allergic reaction: Ceftizoxime can rarely cause a sudden rash, facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Get emergency medical help for swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Directions for Use

Storage and disposal

Deucef injection is stored and handled by the healthcare facility. Keep any supplied medicine away from children and do not keep or dispose of injection materials at home. Follow the clinic's instructions for disposal.

Quick Tips

  • Tell the healthcare team about penicillin or cephalosporin reactions before the injection.
  • Do not use this medicine for a common cold or another viral illness.
  • Continue treatment for the prescribed period unless your doctor changes it.
  • Report severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea during or after treatment.
  • Tell the healthcare team about kidney disease and medicines that affect kidney function.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much ceftizoxime may increase nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, confusion or other serious reactions, especially when kidney function is reduced. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ceftizoxime prevents susceptible bacteria from forming a strong protective cell wall. Without this wall, the bacteria break down and die, helping the body's defenses clear the infection.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Deucef injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, aminoglycoside antibiotics, strong water tablets and other medicines that can affect kidney function may increase kidney-related side effects. The healthcare team may need to review these medicines before giving the injection.
