Medical Description

Decitex powder for injection is a specialist medicine used in selected adults with myelodysplastic syndromes or acute myeloid leukaemia, conditions that affect blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. It contains decitabine, which helps abnormal marrow cells mature more normally or die so healthier blood cells can develop. By changing abnormal growth instructions in these cells, decitabine can improve the marrow's ability to produce blood cells. Decitex powder for injection is prepared and given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, with blood tests used to monitor treatment.

Uses

  • Myelodysplastic syndromes: Helps manage disorders in which the bone marrow produces abnormal or insufficient blood cells, under specialist supervision.
  • Acute myeloid leukaemia: Helps control abnormal blood-forming cells in selected adults as part of a specialist treatment plan.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor before treatment if you have an active infection, low blood cell counts, kidney or liver disease, or a previous severe reaction to chemotherapy, because these conditions may need special assessment.

Side effects

  • Low white blood cells: Treatment can reduce infection-fighting cells, so fever, chills or a new cough needs immediate contact with the treatment team.
  • Low platelets: Fewer clotting cells may cause bruising, nosebleeds or bleeding gums. Report bleeding that does not stop urgently.
  • Anaemia: Reduced red blood cells can cause unusual tiredness, weakness or breathlessness. Tell the treatment team if these symptoms worsen.
  • Nausea: Decitabine may upset the stomach during treatment. Use the anti-sickness medicine prescribed and seek help if drinking becomes difficult.
  • Diarrhoea: Loose stools can cause dehydration during treatment. Contact the team for persistent diarrhoea, blood in stools or severe abdominal pain.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use Decitex during pregnancy. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or think pregnancy may be possible. You and your partner should discuss reliable contraception with the oncology team.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. Trained staff will prepare the powder and give it into a vein according to the specialist treatment plan. Blood tests are needed during treatment.

Storage and disposal

Decitex powder for injection must be stored, prepared and discarded by the healthcare facility according to professional instructions. Do not use a damaged vial or a prepared solution that is discoloured or contains unexpected particles.

Quick Tips

  • Keep every blood-test and specialist appointment.
  • Report fever, chills, cough or other infection signs immediately.
  • Report unusual bruising, nosebleeds or bleeding gums promptly.
  • Ask before receiving any vaccine, especially a live vaccine.
  • Tell the treatment team about new medicines or supplements before treatment.

Dosage

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

Overdose

An excess may severely reduce blood cell counts and increase infection or bleeding risk. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

How does this medicine work?

The active ingredient, decitabine, changes chemical signals attached to the genetic material of abnormal bone marrow cells. This can reactivate instructions that help immature cells mature more normally or die. As abnormal cells are controlled, the bone marrow may produce healthier red cells, white cells and platelets.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Decitex works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention other chemotherapy or bone-marrow-suppressing medicines, immunosuppressants, leflunomide and live vaccines, because they may further lower blood cell counts, increase infection or bleeding risk, or cause vaccine-related problems.

Interactions with food items

  • No specific food restrictions are required because Decitex powder for injection is given intravenously.
  • Maintain adequate fluid intake as your healthcare team advises.
  • Try to avoid alcohol or discuss alcohol consumption with your doctor during treatment.
