Medical Description

injection is an anti-cancer medicine that contains dacarbazine. It is used in the management of metastatic malignant melanoma, and classical Hodgkin lymphoma

injection works by damaging the genetic material of cancer cells , stopping them from growing and dividing. A doctor or trained nurse gives it as an injection in a hospital setting.

injection can severely suppress bone marrow function, reducing white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. If you notice serious symptoms such as unusual bruising, signs of an infection like a fever, or severe abdominal pain, you must contact your doctor immediately. The common side effects of injection are nausea, vomiting, and reduced appetite.

Your doctor will monitor your liver function and blood counts regularly during the treatment.

How does this medicine work?

injection is converted in the body into active metabolites that can damage the DNA of cancer cells. This interferes with cancer-cell growth and division and can ultimately cause cancer-cell death.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Phenytoin: injection may reduce the absorption of phenytoin and make it less effective. Tell your doctor if you take phenytoin.
  • Other chemotherapy medicines or radiation therapy: These may further reduce blood cell counts and increase the risk of infections or bleeding.
  • Fotemustine: This combination should generally be avoided because it may increase the risk of serious lung problems.
  • Live vaccines: Avoid live vaccines during treatment unless your doctor advises otherwise, as injection can weaken your immune system and increase the risk of infection.
  • Some medicines that affect liver enzymes may change how injection works.
  • Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you take.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

injection can significantly lower white blood cell and platelet counts. Regular blood tests help your doctor catch these problems early and adjust treatment as needed.
If injection leaks outside the vein, it can cause pain and tissue damage. Tell your nurse immediately if you experience burning or pain at the injection site.
Live vaccines should be avoided during and for some months after treatment, as injection weakens the immune system and can lead to serious infection from a live vaccine. Discuss with your doctor before taking any vaccination.
