Medical Description

Clofranil is a tablet to treat depression. It is also used to treat people suffering from obstructive compulsive disorder(OCD), major depressive disorder and chronic pain. It is also used for a wide range of conditions like panic attacks, anxiety by lightning and relieving the mood. It contains Clomipramine as an active ingredient and works by increasing the activity of hormones in the brain, which regulate mood, emotions and behaviour by stimulating positive thoughts and feelings. The dose duration of this medicine varies among individuals depending on the severity and condition it is being used for. You should not take more doses than prescribed by the doctor. This medicine is not meant for children. The use of this medicine without proper prescription can cause serious health issues.

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Disorders with an obsessive-compulsive component (e.g. depression, schizophrenia, Tourette’s condition).
  • Depression
  • Panic disorder
  • Chronic pain (e.g. central pain, idiopathic pain disorder, tension headache, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, neuropathic pain)

Contraindications

If you are allergic to Clofranil or any of its active ingredients. If you are suffering from any pre-existing heart condition (i.e., Heart failure, chest pain, blockage in the heart) or have undergone any recent heart surgery. If you suffer from severe liver disease or eye conditions (i.e.glaucoma). If you are suffering from any other bacterial infections(i.e.pneumonia, skin infections) and are taking medications for the same. This medicine should not be taken in combination with any other medicine (i.e., MAO inhibitors), also used to treat depression. There should be a minimum interval of 14 days between the onset of the medication. If you are on other antibacterial medicines such as linezolid.

Driving

Clofranil tablets can affect your ability to drive or use heavy machines. Since the medication affects the body’s nervous system, it is advised not to get involved with any work that requires mental attention and focus. It can also cause dizziness and sleepiness, thus avoid driving.

Alcohol

Alcohol consumption is not safe when you are taking Clofranil tablets. Clofranil medicine reacts with alcohol to give harmful side effects and thus should not be consumed with alcohol.

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have any heart, liver or kidney problems.
  • You’re allergic to any active ingredients in the tablet.
  • You have any symptoms after the onset of the medication.
  • You want to discontinue the medication. Sudden discontinuation of the medication can cause withdrawal symptoms.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Directions for Use

  • Take the Clofranil tablet as a whole with a glass of water or as directed by your doctor.
  • Avoid having it on an empty stomach as it may irritate the stomach. Always take it after meals as that protects the stomach from harmful effects.

Storage and disposal

Keep it at room temperature and protect it from light and moisture. Keep it out of children and pets reach.

Overdose

  • Overdose of Clofranil pills can be fatal. If you happen to take too many Clofranil tablets, reach out to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include feeling restless or agitated, irregular heartbeats, excessive sweating, extreme drowsiness, feeling of passing out, slow movements, seizure or coma.

Missed a Dose

If you’ve missed a dose of the Clofranil tablet, then take it as soon as you remember. There should be an interval of at least 6 hours between two doses. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

Clofranil works by increasing the action of chemical messengers like serotonin and norepinephrine, also known as “feel-good hormones” responsible for regulating an individual’s mood, emotions, and positive well-being. It also helps reduce pain by increasing the uptake of these hormones and giving the individual momentary relief.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Do not take Clofranil tablets if you take antibacterials like linezolid.
  • Do not take Clofranil tablets if you are on medications to treat hypertension, such as clonidine or acetobutol.
  • Do not take Clofranil tablets if you are using nasal decongestants (phenylephrine), pain killers (tramadol, aceclofenac, acemetacin, paracetamol), allergy medications(Chlorpheniramine).
  • Do not take Clofranil if you are already taking another medication such as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors( MAO), as it may cause severe complications. There should be a gap of at least 14 days between the two medicines.

Interactions with food items

  • During the course of medication of Clofranil tablets, products containing grapefruit should be avoided as it may cause severe side effects.
