Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or could be pregnant. Acenocoumarol can harm an unborn baby and is used in pregnancy only under specialist direction.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. The doctor will decide whether this medicine is suitable and whether monitoring is needed.

Driving

Driving

This medicine is not expected to impair driving, but do not drive if you feel dizzy, weak, or affected by bleeding.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Heavy alcohol use can increase bleeding risk and make clotting control unpredictable. Ask your doctor about alcohol.

Directions for Use

Take the tablet whole with sufficient water at the time advised by your doctor. Do not change the amount or stop treatment without medical advice. Attend all blood tests arranged to monitor clotting.

Storage and disposal

Store the tablets in the original strip in a cool, dry place away from heat and moisture. Keep them out of reach of children and ask a pharmacist how to discard expired tablets.

Quick Tips

  • Carry an anticoagulant alert card or keep your treatment details with you.
  • Tell every doctor and dentist that you take cgtrom.
  • Seek urgent help for unusual bleeding, black stools, or a severe headache.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much may cause serious bleeding, blood in urine or stools, vomiting blood, severe headache, or weakness. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, contact your doctor or anticoagulation clinic as soon as you remember for advice. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Acenocoumarol reduces the action of vitamin K, which the liver needs to make several clotting proteins. This makes the blood less likely to form harmful clots.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way acenocoumarol works and may cause dangerous bleeding or clotting. Tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use. In particular, mention other blood thinners, pain relievers, antibiotics, medicines for seizures, steroids, and herbal products containing ginkgo or garlic.

Interactions with food items

Keep your intake of vitamin K rich foods reasonably consistent rather than making sudden changes. Ask your doctor before starting supplements or major diet changes, and avoid heavy alcohol use.
