Medical Description

Cervavac suspension for vaccine is used to help prevent selected human papillomavirus infections and the serious diseases linked to them. It contains a quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine, which trains the immune system to make antibodies against selected virus types. Protection is strongest when vaccination is given before exposure, but the vaccine does not treat an existing infection or replace recommended screening. A doctor or nurse gives Cervavac vaccine as an injection into a muscle to eligible males and females according to the recommended age and schedule.

Uses

  • Prevention of human papillomavirus-associated cancers: Protection against selected virus types lowers the future risk of cervical, vaginal, vulvar and anal cancers.
  • Prevention of selected human papillomavirus infection: Antibodies help prevent infection with vaccine-covered types, with greatest benefit before exposure; screening remains necessary.
  • Prevention of genital warts: Vaccination can help protect against genital warts caused by covered human papillomavirus types.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine or had a severe allergic reaction after a previous dose of a human papillomavirus vaccine, do not receive it. A further dose should be reviewed by a doctor after any severe reaction.

Side effects

  • Injection-site pain: The vaccinated arm may feel sore as the local immune response develops. Keep movement gentle and tell the vaccinator if pain is severe or persistent.
  • Redness or swelling: Skin around the injection may become red or puffy for a short time. Seek advice if swelling spreads quickly or becomes very painful.
  • Itching or bruising: The injection area may itch or show a small bruise after the needle. Tell the healthcare professional if it worsens.
  • Nausea: Mild nausea can occur after vaccination. Sip fluids and seek medical care if vomiting is persistent.
  • Dizziness: Light-headedness may occur around the injection or while standing. Sit or lie down until it passes and tell the healthcare professional.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Vaccination is generally postponed during pregnancy, and remaining doses can be discussed after pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. The vaccine may be given when considered appropriate by a healthcare professional.

Driving

Driving

Dizziness or weakness may occur after vaccination. Do not drive until you feel fully well.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific alcohol interaction is established. Ask your doctor if you feel unwell after vaccination.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. Remain under observation as advised after vaccination. Follow the schedule provided by your healthcare professional. Cervavac vaccine does not treat an existing human papillomavirus infection or replace cervical screening.

Storage and disposal

The vaccine must be stored and handled by healthcare staff under the manufacturer's cold-storage instructions. Do not freeze it. Unused or opened vaccine should be discarded by the clinic.

Quick Tips

  • Keep the vaccination record and follow the schedule advised by your doctor.
  • Tell the vaccinator about severe allergies, pregnancy or a weakened immune system.
  • Remain seated after vaccination if you have previously fainted with injections.
  • Continue recommended cervical screening even after vaccination.

Dosage

Overdose

An extra vaccine dose should be reported to the healthcare professional. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The vaccine contains harmless components that resemble selected human papillomavirus types but cannot cause the infection. They stimulate antibody production, helping the immune system recognise and fight those virus types in the future.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Cervavac vaccine works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention medicines that reduce immunity, including methotrexate, methylprednisolone, ifosfamide, lomustine and melphalan, because they may reduce the immune response. Tell the doctor about other vaccines planned for the same visit.
