Medical Description

Calmpose tablet is a prescription medication primarily used to treat mood disorders like anxiety disorders and short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. As an adjuvant therapy, it can also be used to treat acute alcohol withdrawal, muscle spasms and seizures. Calmpose tablet contains Diazepam as an active ingredient. Diazepam works by reducing the excessive neurological activity in the brain by increasing certain chemical messengers. Reduced abnormal and excessive nerve cell activity helps relax the brain and stabilises various conditions. Calmpose tablet has to be taken as per the doctor’s advice. Discontinuing the Calmpose tablet abruptly can lead to rebound anxiety, which can be more severe than before or may result in withdrawal symptoms like headache, drowsiness, or sudden mood changes.

Uses

  • As per CDSCO and USFDA, the Calmpose tablet is used for the following:
  • Treatment of anxiety disorder
  • Treatment of seizure or epilepsy
  • Treatment of acute alcohol withdrawal
  • Treatment of muscle spasm

Contraindications

  • It is contraindicated in the following cases:
  • If you are allergic to any component of the Calmpose tablet, i.e. Diazepam
  • If you are taking medications like antidepressants, anti-anxiety or sedative medications, narcotic or opioid pain relievers
  • If you have myasthenia gravis (a condition that causes skeletal muscle weakness)
  • If you have acute angle glaucoma (abnormally increases the fluid pressure in the eyes)
  • If you have kidney or liver problems
  • If you have a history of alcohol or medicine addiction
  • If you have respiratory problems like sleep apnea or asthma, etc.

Overdose

Calmpose tablet overdose can cause dizziness, confusion, lightheadedness, tremors, drowsiness, convulsions, loss of consciousness, central nervous system depression, coma (rarely), death (rarely), etc. If you have these overdose symptoms, contact your doctor and seek emergency medical treatment from the nearby hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed a dose of the Calmpose tablet, take it as you remember. Skip the missing dose and continue the routine schedule if the next dose is near. Do not double the dose to compensate for the missing dose.

How Does It Work?

Calmpose tablet is composed of Diazepam-5 mg, which belongs to the benzodiazepine class of medicine. Diazepam binds to gamma-aminobutyric (GABA) receptors in the brain, which increases GABA activity, a natural chemical messenger in the brain. Increased effects of GABA causes suppression of the excessive and abnormal electrical activity of the nerve cells in the brain and produces a feeling of relaxation and calmness.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Avoid taking Calmpose tablets with caffeine-containing foods like cola, tea, coffee, chocolates, etc. It may reduce the ability of this medication to calm the brain, and the condition may worsen.

Interactions with food items

  • Tell your doctor what medications, herbal products, vitamins and nutritional supplements you take or plan to take as there is a chance of medicine interaction. Many medicines can interact with the Calmpose tablet, making it less effective or increasing side effects. This includes the following:
  • Calmpose tablet interaction with other benzodiazepines, opioid or narcotic pain relievers such as morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, tramadol, codeine can lead to respiratory depression, coma and death.
  • Calmpose tablet interaction with MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) like Selegiline, Rasagiline, Isocarboxazid and other antidepressants or mood-elevating medicines like fluoxetine and desipramine can increase side effects.
  • Calmpose tablet interaction with antifungal medications like itraconazole and ketoconazole can reduce its effects.
