Medical Description

Bdocterio Powder For Injection is used in the management of patients with acromegaly (a hormonal disorder that occurs when the body produces too much growth hormone during adulthood ), gastro-entero-pancreatic endocrine tumours (which are rare tumours that develop from hormone-producing cells in the digestive system or pancreas), and carcinoid syndrome (a group of symptoms caused by certain hormone-producing tumours, often leading to flushing and diarrhoea). It is also used for the treatment of VIPomas (rare pancreatic tumours that produce excessive vasoactive intestinal peptide, causing severe watery diarrhoea), glucagonomas (rare pancreatic tumours that produce too much glucagon, which can cause high blood sugar and cause skin changes), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a condition in which tumours cause excessive stomach acid production, leading to recurrent ulcers and diarrhoea), and insulinomas (pancreatic tumours that produce too much insulin, causing abnormally low blood sugar) for pre-operative control of low blood glucose levels. Bdocterio Powder For Injection is a somatostatin analogue, meaning it mimics the action of the natural hormone somatostatin. It contains octreotide as an active ingredient. It works like the natural hormone somatostatin and inhibits growth hormone, glucagon, and insulin. It also inhibits the release of serotonin, gastrin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, secretin, motilin, and pancreatic polypeptide. In acromegaly, it reduces and at times may even normalize growth hormone and IGF-1 levels. Bdocterio Powder For Injection is given as an injection by a trained healthcare provider in a hospital or clinic setting. Bdocterio Powder For Injection may lead to side effects like diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, nausea, headache, and pain at the injection site. It can also affect the gallbladder and may cause gallstones, alter blood sugar levels, lower thyroid hormone levels, and slow the heart rate. Warning signs that need urgent medical attention include severe or persistent abdominal pain, signs of gallstones or their complications (such as inflammation of the gallbladder, bile ducts, or pancreas), progressive abdominal swelling with severe upper abdominal pain and tenderness, irregular or very slow heartbeat, worsening breathlessness or swelling in people with heart failure, and signs of a severe allergic reaction. Before starting Bdocterio Powder For Injection, discuss your medical history with your doctor in detail, which includes any gallbladder problems, diabetes, thyroid problems, heart or heart rhythm problems, liver cirrhosis, kidney failure requiring dialysis, and pregnancy plans. Premenopausal women should use this medicine with caution as it may affect their fertility. You should also tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking, especially cyclosporine, insulin or oral diabetes medicines, beta-blockers, and bromocriptine.

Alcohol

Alcohol

It is best to discuss alcohol use with your doctor, particularly because this medicine can affect the gallbladder and commonly causes gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea and abdominal pain.

  • You have gallstones or a history of gallbladder problems.
  • You have diabetes or problems with blood sugar control.
  • You have thyroid problems.
  • You have a history of heart problems, a slow heartbeat, or an abnormal heart rhythm.

Directions for Use

  • Bdocterio Powder For Injection is given by a trained healthcare provider as an injection into the gluteal (buttock) muscle in exact doses recommended by your doctor. Do not administer it into a vein or under the skin.

Quick Tips

  • Keep all your scheduled return visits for injections to keep symptoms and hormone levels under control.
  • Contact your doctor if you have symptoms of gallstones, such as upper abdominal pain.
  • Attend all the scheduled blood tests recommended by your doctor. This will help your doctor monitor your blood sugar and thyroid function at the beginning and periodically during the treatment.
  • Report a very slow or irregular heartbeat, or worsening breathlessness or swelling, if you have heart problems.
  • Your doctor may check your vitamin B12 levels during treatment, as octreotide can lower its level.
  • Tell your doctor about all your medicines before starting or stopping any.
  • Premenopausal women should discuss the possibility of unintended pregnancy with their doctor.

Dosage

Overdose

Because Bdocterio Powder For Injection is administered by a healthcare provider, the chance of overdose is unlikely. Symptoms of overdose include low blood sugar, flushing, dizziness, and nausea. There is no specific antidote for Bdocterio Powder For Injection overdose. Treatment is supportive and includes appropriate monitoring.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a scheduled injection, contact your doctor as soon as possible to reschedule.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Bdocterio Powder For Injection given with cyclosporine may decrease blood levels of cyclosporine and result in transplant rejection.
  • Bdocterio Powder For Injection inhibits insulin and glucagon secretion, so monitoring of blood sugar levels as recommended by your doctor is essential. Your doctor may need to adjust doses of insulin or oral diabetes medicines based on your reports.
  • Bdocterio Powder For Injection increases the blood levels of bromocriptine.
  • Medicines that lower the heart rate, like beta-blockers, can lead to an additional decrease in heart rate when combined with Bdocterio Powder For Injection. You may need to adjust the dose of these medicines.
  • Medicines mainly broken down by the enzyme CYP3A4 that have a narrow safety margin (for example, quinidine and terfenadine) should be used with caution.
  • Bdocterio Powder For Injection may alter the absorption of nutrients and of medicines taken by mouth.
  • Patients should tell their doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and herbal products they are taking before and during Bdocterio Powder For Injection treatment.
