Medical Description
Bdnab powder for injection contains paclitaxel bound to human albumin as its active drug formulation. It is a prescription cancer medicine used to treat breast cancer after failure of combination chemotherapy for metastatic disease or relapse within 6 months of adjuvant chemotherapy.
Cancer cells divide rapidly. Bdnab powder for injection contains albumin-bound paclitaxel, which disrupts the microtubules needed for cell division, thereby inhibiting cancer-cell growth and causing cell death.
Unlike conventional paclitaxel formulations, this albumin-bound formulation does not contain solvent-based excipients and generally does not require routine premedication for hypersensitivity reactions.
Trained healthcare professionals administer it by IV infusion as advised. Regular blood count and neurological monitoring are required because treatment can cause bone marrow suppression and peripheral neuropathy.
Uses
- breast cancer after failure of combination chemotherapy for metastatic disease or relapse within 6 months of adjuvant chemotherapy.
Contraindications
- If you have had a severe allergic reaction to paclitaxel, human albumin, or any ingredient in this medicine.
- If your baseline white blood cell count is very low.
- If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it is not an absolute contraindication, but paclitaxel may harm the fetus and should generally be avoided unless the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk.
- If you are currently breastfeeding.
Side effects
- Temporary hair loss (alopecia) on the scalp and body, which is temporary.
- Low white blood cell count, risking infections
- Low red blood cells (anaemia), causing tiredness, pale skin, and weakness
- Low blood platelets, which can lead to easy bruising or minor bleeding
- Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in your fingers and toes (nerve discomfort)
- Mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and loss of appetite
- Muscle aches and joint pain, usually lasting a few days after an infusion
- Feeling very tired or physically weak
- Changes in liver function tests
- Fever
- Mouth or throat inflammation
- Skin changes or rash
- Signs of Severe Infection (Febrile Neutropenia): Fever, chills, sore throat, or other signs of infection, especially when white blood cell counts are low.
- Severe peripheral neuropathy: Worsening numbness, tingling, pain, or difficulty performing normal activities.
- Unusual Bleeding: Bleeding gums, frequent nosebleeds, or dark blood in your stool caused by very low blood platelets.
- Severe hypersensitivity reaction: Breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, rash, dizziness, or other symptoms during or shortly after the infusion.
- Severe blood-cell abnormalities: Marked reductions in white blood cells, platelets, or red blood cells requiring prompt medical assessment.
Directions for Use
- Trained medical staff prepare and handle the medicine.
- Your oncologist determines the dose based on your cancer type, treatment regimen, body surface area, and blood test results.
- Bdnab powder for injection should not be substituted for conventional paclitaxel formulations.
- Do not skip or delay scheduled treatment without consulting your doctor.
Storage and disposal
- {cb}} powder for injection is supplied as a sterile lyophilised powder and should be stored according to the product-specific storage instructions. The product information for Abraxane states that unopened vials do not require special temperature storage conditions.
- After reconstitution, storage conditions and duration depend on the preparation and must follow the product information and hospital protocol.
- Hospital staff dispose of all leftover liquid, IV bags, and needles in accordance with biohazard waste procedures.
- Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Tell your doctor about all prescription and OTC medicines, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you take.
- Medicines affecting CYP2C8 or CYP3A4 may alter paclitaxel levels and require monitoring.
- Other bone marrow-suppressing medicines may increase the risk of low blood counts.
- Other medicines that cause peripheral neuropathy may increase nerve-related side effects.
- Bdnab powder for injection should not be substituted for or used interchangeably with other paclitaxel formulations.
- Avoid live vaccines during significant immunosuppression unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise.
Interactions with food items

- Avoid raw or undercooked foods and unpasteurised products when your doctor advises precautions because of low blood cell counts.
- Try to avoid alcohol during treatment, as it can worsen nausea, dehydration, and strain on your liver.
- Drink plenty of water and eat small, light meals to help manage stomach upset.
