Medical Description
Azithral 500 Tablet is a type of antibiotic medicine used to treat various bacterial infections, including those affecting your nose, throat, tonsils, ears, lungs, and skin. It helps by stopping the bacteria from growing and multiplying, allowing your body to fight off the infection more effectively. This medicine is not effective against viral infections, such as the common cold or flu.
Some people may experience mild side effects while taking Azithral 500, such as stomach pain, diarrhoea, nausea, or headaches. These usually resolve on their own, but if they persist or worsen, consult your doctor. In rare cases, people may develop a serious allergic reaction with symptoms such as a rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing. If this happens, seek medical help right away.
You can take this tablet with or without food, as advised by your doctor. Even if you start to feel better after a few days, it’s important to keep taking it for the full time your doctor prescribed. Stopping the medicine too early or skipping doses can allow the infection to come back and make it harder to treat in the future.
Azithral 500 should not be used if you are allergic to azithromycin or similar antibiotics. Let your doctor know if you have any heart, liver, or kidney conditions, or if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. This helps them decide if this medicine is safe for you to use.
Other tablets, such as Azithral 500, Azicip 500, Azax 500, and Azifast 500, also contain azithromycin as their main ingredient, and they work in a similar manner to Azithral 500. Always follow your doctor’s instructions when using any of these medications to ensure safe and effective treatment.
Uses
- Acute bacterial sinusitis
- Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are caused by susceptible bacteria, particularly in patients who cannot take penicillin.
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Certain sexually transmitted infections (such as urethritis, cervicitis in females, and genital ulcers in males)
- Ear infections (otitis media)
Contraindications
- Known sensitivity or allergy to azithromycin, erythromycin, other similar antibiotics, or any ingredient in this medicine
- A history of cholestatic jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes due to reduced bile flow from the liver) or liver disease associated with prior use of this medicine

- You have heart problems or abnormal heart rhythms.
- Stop taking this medicine and seek medical attention immediately if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe tiredness, or persistent nausea, as these may be signs of liver problems.
- Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, especially severe kidney impairment.
- Tell your doctor if you have low potassium or magnesium levels, a slow heartbeat, or are taking medicines that affect heart rhythm, as these may increase the risk of serious heart rhythm problems.
- Severe diarrhoea may occur during or after taking this medicine. Contact your doctor if you develop persistent or severe diarrhoea.
- Tell your doctor if you have myasthenia gravis, as worsening of symptoms has been reported with this medicine.
- Do not use this medicine for viral infections, such as the common cold or flu.
- Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of other microorganisms, including fungi. Contact your doctor if a new infection develops during treatment.
- Rare but serious allergic reactions may occur even after the first dose.
- Take this medicine only for the infection for which it was prescribed. Do not use leftover antibiotics for future illnesses.
Directions for Use
- Always take this medication according to your doctor's instructions:
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Swallow the tablet whole with water (with or without food).
- Complete the full course even if you start feeling better.
- Take the medicine at the same time each day whenever possible.
- Do not skip doses during the course.
Storage and disposal
- Store at temperatures below 30°C.
- Keep the medicine in its original packaging until use.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Do not use after the expiry date.
- Dispose of unused medicine according to local regulations or your doctor's advice.
