Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Amitrip 25mg tablets have a main component called amitriptyline. This component comes under the class of tricyclic antidepressants (TCA). While the specific action of amitriptyline is not yet clear, it has been observed to work by reducing the absorption of serotonin and norepinephrine. These two chemicals are present in the brain and act as messengers to pass information to and from the brain. When their work is done, i.e., the message has been passed, they are usually absorbed by the nerve cells present in the brain. But because of amitriptyline, their absorption is decreased. When it happens, they can be used again for passing the message. This act of using the same chemical again and again for message transfer is beneficial. All of this causes mood relaxation and elevation. Along with amitriptyline, the presence of another chemical called desipramine in the body allows for these chemical messengers to be used again and again.
