Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant. It possesses sedative and anticholinergic effects. In addition, it blocks the absorption of neurotransmitters, including noradrenaline and serotonin, which are found at our brain's nerve endings, hence causing their deactivation. The monoamine neurotransmitters' activity in the brain increases by preventing reuptake. It appears to be related to antidepressant action and aids in mood regulation. It also reduces neuropathic pain by blocking pain signals from neurons to the brain (pain from damaged nerves).
