Medical Description

Akt 2 Tablet contains a combination of two medicines, rifampicin and isoniazid. It is used in the treatment of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection of the lungs. It is characterised by chronic cough for more than two weeks, sweating at night, mild fever, and weight loss. The combination of rifampicin and isoniazid helps kill as well as stop the growth of the bacteria. Akt 2 Tablets should be taken for a duration as prescribed by the doctor. Ideally, it should be taken on an empty stomach and at a particular time of the day. The medicine should not be discontinued without consulting the doctor, even if you feel better. Side effects of Akt 2 Tab include nausea, vomiting, jaundice, dark coloured urine, yellowing of the skin, and an increase in liver enzymes. Although most of these side effects are very mild and do not affect day-to-day activities, you must immediately inform your doctor if they become severe. It is advisable to inform your doctor about any pre-existing health conditions that you may have. People with liver disease or kidney disease should be careful while taking this medicine. Kidney function tests and liver function tests should be done to continuously monitor the functions of both organs. Since Akt 2 Tablet is a combination of two antibiotics, discontinuation of the medicine can lead to antibiotic resistance. It can re-occurrence of the infection and can also aggravate the infection.

Treatment of tuberculosis

Contraindications

If you have any known allergic reactions to the components of Akt 2 Tab.
If you have any pre-existing liver conditions.
If you have kidney disease.
If you have diabetes.
If you are a chronic alcoholic.
If you have pre-existing blood disorders like haemolytic anaemia, agranulocytosis, aplastic anaemia, etc.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

You should consult your doctor if you are pregnant and are taking Akt 2 Tablets. Akt 2 Tablets are not recommended for those planning to get pregnant in the next three months. Akt 2 Tablets can cause damage to the liver, which can affect your pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Akt 2 Tablets can be used while breastfeeding. It does not get excreted in breast milk, and so does not affect the baby.

Driving

You should not drive after taking the Akt 2 Tablets as it can cause impairment in judgement and blurred vision. The medicine is known to cause optic neuritis, a condition in which there is inflammation of the optic nerve, which may lead to loss of vision.

Alcohol

You should not consume alcohol with Akt 2 Tablets because it can exacerbate the side effects like flushing, nausea, chest pain, low blood pressure, and palpitations.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if

You notice yellowing of skin or nails.
You have a sensation of tingling or numbness on your hands or feet.
You experience any vision problems.
You experience symptoms of a decrease in blood sugar levels (hypoglycaemia) like sweating, confusion, and palpitations.
You experience side effects that are persistent or worsen in time.

Directions for Use

Take Akt 2 Tab as advised by your physician.
Take Akt 2 Tab on an empty stomach and at a particular time of the day.
Do not exceed the recommended dosage.
Do not stop taking Akt 2 Tab without consulting your physician first.

Storage and disposal

Keep Akt 2 Tablets packed in the container they came in. This medicine must be kept in a cool and dry place, at a temp below 30°C. Store it as per the package or label's directions. The unused/expired medicine must be disposed of cautiously. Make sure that this medicine is out of the reach of children and pets.

Overdose

You should inform your doctor if you experience any severe side effects of the overdose of Akt 2 Tab like fever, yellowish discolouration of skin and eyes, pain, or swelling of the joints.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed a dose of Akt 2 Tablet, you should take it as soon as possible. However, do not take a double dose of the medicine to compensate for the missed dose. If it is time for the next dose, skip the dose you have missed and take the scheduled one.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

The two antibiotics present in the Akt 2 Tablet are Rifampicin and Isoniazid. Rifampicin acts on a bacterial enzyme (RNA-polymerase) and inhibits it. This bacterial enzyme is involved in the replication of the genetic material of the bacteria. Rifampicin inhibits this enzyme, and hence essential proteins are not synthesised, and the bacteria are unable to survive. Isoniazid inhibits the synthesis of the cell wall of the bacteria. An important component of the cell wall of the bacteria is mycolic acid. Isoniazid inhibits the synthesis of mycolic acid. Together both medicines have bactericidal effects.

Most of these medicines interact with Akt 2 and decrease the absorption and efficacy of either. Rifampicin and Isoniazid in the body. In some cases the drug interactions lead to increased problems in the liver(hepato-toxicity).

Interactions with food items

Akt 2 Tablets should be taken on an empty stomach. This is because food decreases the absorption of one of the components of the Akt 2 Tablet, rifampicin. You should avoid food items rich in tyramine like cheese, beer, red wine, salmon fish, and meat.

Yes, the Akt 2 Tablet can cause discolouration of sweat, saliva, and urine. The colour usually becomes reddish-orange. However, it is normal, and you should not worry about it.

When taking Akt 2 Tablet, you should avoid food containing tyramine or histamine like soy sauce, beer, red wine, salmon fish, sausages, and salami.
