Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Actifed Plus tablet consists of pseudoephedrine, paracetamol, and triprolidine as three main ingredients. Acetaminophen works as an anti-analgesic (painkiller) and antipyretic (lowers fever). It helps decrease the production of chemical substances like prostaglandins (a natural substance in the body), responsible for pain and inflammation. It also regulates the body temperature by working on specific areas in the brain (hypothalamic heat-regulating centre). Pseudoephedrine has mixed modes of action. It acts directly and indirectly on specific receptors, which results in the release of norepinephrine from the nerve cells. It is a natural chemical messenger which acts on other receptors. It results in nasal and sinus decongestion, providing relief from blocked nose and sinuses. It also has some sedation properties. Triprolidine is an antihistamine medicine (reduces allergic reactions). Histamine is a chemical messenger which is released when it notices a foreign substance in the body. It is responsible for all the allergic reactions like rash, itching, swelling, sneezing, watery eyes, etc. Triprolidine binds to specific receptors, which prevents the action of histamine. It results in the reduction of allergic symptoms.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Do not take the Actifed Plus tablet with other medications like opioid pain relievers, as they can cause extreme drowsiness. It can also damage the liver.
  • Do not take an Actifed Plus tablet with MAO (monoamine oxidase) antidepressants like linezolid, naltrexone, methylene blue, etc. They can cause increased side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, tremors, lethargy, vomiting, etc.
  • Do not take it with antihistamines (anti-allergy medicine) like cetirizine and diphenhydramine, as they can also increase the effects of drowsiness.
  • Taking this medicine with other medications such as antifungal medicines, antiepileptic medicine (controls seizures), antivirals like HIV medicines can cause interactions and cause unwanted side effects or lower their effectiveness.
