Ropinirole is a Dopamine-like medicine used in the treatment of symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (stiffness/ rigidity, tremors and slow movements) and restless leg syndrome. This medicine works by helping to restore the balance of a certain natural substance (Dopamine) in the brain.

  • Antipsychotics (e.g. Chlorpromazine, Haloperidol, Thiothixene, Metoclopramide)
  • Other products such as opioid pain or cough relievers (Codeine, Hydrocodone)

  • Muscle relaxants (Carisoprodol, Cyclobenzaprine)
  • Antihistamines (Cetirizine, Diphenhydramine)

By using caffeine beverages together with Ropinirole may increase the effects of Ropinirole. It may cause nausea, vomiting, weakness, drowsiness, fainting and confusion. Alcohol can increase the side effects of Ropinirole like dizziness, drowsiness, impairment in thinking and judgment, and difficulty in concentrating.

Ropinirole should be taken in the exact dose as advised by the physician. Do not take more than the recommended dose of this medicine as overdose of Ropinirole can cause serious problems. Do not chew the extended-release tablet. Take Ropinirole with a full glass of water. It may be taken with or without food. Do not stop the medication suddenly as it may lead to worsening of the condition.

Ropinirole should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture, sunlight and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.

It is advisable to avoid taking Ropinirole during pregnancy and nursing. This drug will be prescribed during pregnancy only if the benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the fetus. This drug inhibits the secretion of prolactin hormone essential for nursing and thus could potentially inhibit breastfeeding.
