Molecule Description
Povidone-Iodine belongs to a class of medicines called antiseptics and disinfectants. It is a broad-spectrum agent; it works against a wide variety of germs, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. It is used to prevent and treat skin infections in minor cuts, scrapes, burns, and wounds. In healthcare settings, it is used to prepare the skin before surgery to keep the area clean.
Povidone-Iodine works by releasing free iodine when applied. This iodine penetrates and disrupts the vital structures of germs, killing them. It is a disinfectant, making it useful for indications, including: Antisepsis of intact or broken skin, treatment of minor skin wounds, use as a surgical scrub, and as a mouthwash/gargle for minor mouth/throat irritation.

Contraindications
When should one not use Povidone-Iodine

Side effects

Redness: Temporary redness or flushing of the skin.

Talk to your doctor if

- Do not let it into your eyes, if contact occurs then rinse it thoroughly.

Overdose

Missed a Dose
If you realize you missed an application, use the product (apply to the skin or gargle, depending on the form) as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled application (for example, if you apply every 8 hours and you remember only 1 hour before the next one is due), then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
