Povidone-Iodine
Description
Povidone-Iodine belongs to a class of medicines called antiseptics and disinfec
tants. It is a broad-spectrum agent; it works against a wide variety of germs, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. It is used to prevent and treat skin infections in minor cuts, scrapes, burns, and wounds. In healthcare settings, it is used to prepare the skin before surgery to keep the area clean. Povidone-Iodine works by releasing free iodine when applied. This iodine penetrates and disrupts the vital structures of germs, killing them. It is a disinfectant, making it useful for indications, including: Antisepsis of intact or broken skin, treatment of minor skin wounds, use as a surgical scrub, and as a mouthwash/gargle for minor mouth/throat irritation.
Uses
- Povidone-Iodine is used to relieve sore throat and other oral infections.
- To prevent dental infection after dental surgeries or operations.
- It is used to prepare the skin before surgery, keeping the area clean.
Contraindications
When should one not use Povidone-Iodine
- If you are allergic to povidone-iodine.
- If you have any thyroid problems.
- It should not be used for more than 7 days unless suggested by the doctor.

Other General Warnings
- You don't feel any improvement within 7 days.
- You feel irritation, pain, redness persists or get worsen, contact your doctor immediately.
- You have burns and are already using povidone-iodine as a topical antiseptic.
- You develop fever, rash or swelling of the throat.
- Do not let it into your eyes, if contact occurs then rinse it thoroughly.
