Levosulpiride
Description
Levosulpiride is used to treat upper abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting
and irritable bowel movement. It is also used in adults for depression and schizophrenia. It works by blocking the effect of dopamine receptors present in the brain. Levosulpiride is available in the form of a tablet, capsule, injection. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or are breastfeeding and about all the medicines and supplements you take and all the conditions or diseases you suffer from, before starting this medicine.
Uses
- Levosulpiride is used for the treatment of upper abdominal pain and bloating, nausea, vomiting, irritable bowel movement, irregular emptying of the stomach in diabetic patients,
- It is also used for the treatment of depression and schizophrenia in adults.
Contraindications
When should one not use Levosulpiride
- If you have allergic to levosulpiride or similar medicines.
- If you have any psychiatric disorder such as fits, sudden change in mood.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- If you are suffering from changes in breast tissues and nodules and have a high level of prolactin hormone.
- If you suffer from a condition called pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland cancer that gives rise to high blood pressure).
- If you are suffering from bleeding or blockage of the stomach and intestine.
- Levosulpiride should not be used in patients below 18 years of age.
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Sleepiness
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Swelling of breasts in men
- Low blood pressure
- Uncontrolled involuntary muscle movements
- Injection site reactions

- You have a history or a family history of heart disease.
- You are suffering from any psychiatric disorder and are on medications for the same.
- You experience dizziness, drowsiness after taking levosulpiride.

Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Some medicines can affect the way levosulpiride works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
- Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
- Especially, if you are taking medications that neutralise acidity in the stomach (containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide).
- The effect of levosulpiride on gut motility can be altered by muscle relaxants like alkaloids, atropine, dicyclomine, painkillers like codeine, opium, ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen.
