The medicine is an anti-histamine, most frequently used to treat allergic reaction.

Uses of Xyzal 5mg Tab 15'S

It is used to treat allergic symptoms like itching, watering of eyes, running nose, sneezing, insect bites and hives.

Contraindications of Xyzal 5mg Tab 15'S

Don't take this medicine if you have an allergy to this medicine or suffer from liver diseases or kidney disorders with reduced rate of removal of creatinine.

Alcohol leads to reduced alertness; thus, performance is impaired. So, it is advised to avoid alcohol or other CNS depressants while consuming this medicine.

Mode of Action of Xyzal 5mg Tab 15'S

How Does It Work?

The composition of Xyzal 5mg Tab 15'S acts by blocking a substance in the body called histamine and helps to decrease allergy symptoms and hives.

Directions for Use of Xyzal 5mg Tab 15'S

This tablet should be swallowed with liquid either with or without food. You can take this medicine when symptoms occur, as in the case of intermittent allergic rhinitis (running nose for less than four days in a week). On suffering from continuous rhinitis or urticaria (a rash of round, red welts on the skin), this medicine is given for a longer duration from 6 months up to a year. This tablet has a film-coated over it and so should not be used in children below six years; instead, the paediatric formulation should be used.

Interactions of Xyzal 5mg Tab 15'S

Interactions with other medicines

  • Levocetirizine clearance is reduced by 16% when consumed with theophylline (which is given to treat asthma and COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Antiviral medicine like ritonavir (used in HIV) causes increased concentration of the medicine
  • Other medicines like azithromycin, diazepam, cimetidine, antipyrine, ketoconazole, erythromycin and pseudoephedrine are not affected by this medicine

Interactions with food items

Food does not affect the absorption of this medicine.

Other general Interactions

In the case of liver disease alone, dose adjustments are not needed. While in instances having both kidney and liver impairment, take the dosage of Xyzal 5mg Tab 15'S as advised by the doctor as doses are adjusted depending on the clearance of creatinine.

Storage and disposal of Xyzal 5mg Tab 15'S

Place it at room temperature and away from children, direct heat and moisture. Keep it in an airtight container. Extra medicines must be discarded appropriately with the help of your pharmacist by medicine take-back program. Avoid throwing it into the garbage or flushing it down the drains.

Overdose

In adults, overdose leads to increased drowsiness, whereas in children it causes restlessness and agitation followed by drowsiness. In such a case, your doctor may do gastric lavage, since haemodialysis does not remove levocetirizine. Rashes and nauseating feeling are also seen at times.
