Q: What is myelodysplastic syndrome?

A: Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a group of disorders characterised by abnormal blood cell production and development in the bone marrow. Because it can progress to acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in some cases, it is frequently classified as a type of blood cancer or a pre-leukemic condition. The myelodysplastic syndrome occurs when the bone marrow does not produce enough healthy blood cells and produces abnormal or immature cells.
