Description

Verovax R vaccine is a rabies vaccine for human use that is used to protect against rabies. Rabies is a viral disease that spreads through bites, scratches, and the saliva of animals infected with the rabies virus. Verovax R vaccine contains very small amounts of a modified form of the rabies virus as the active substance. This vaccine uses the body's natural defence system to provide protection against rabies. It can be used on both adults and children. Your doctor will recommend the best time for you or your child to receive the vaccination.

The most common side effects of the vaccine include pain, joint pain, redness at the injection site, and swelling at the injection site. If any side effects persist or cause concern, consult your doctor. Before receiving the injection, inform your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a vaccine. Please inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking, as some may interact with the rabies vaccine.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

^

Q: What is Verovax R vaccine used for?

A: Verovax R vaccine, and other rabies vaccines, are used to prevent rabies, a severe and often fatal viral disease that affects the central nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord. It's given to people who have been bitten by or exposed to a potentially rabid animal, or to those at high risk of exposure (like veterinarians or travellers to high-risk areas).

Q: How is the rabies vaccine administered?

A: The rabies vaccine is typically administered as an injection into the muscle (intramuscularly), usually in the upper arm, or sometimes into the skin (intradermally), depending on the specific vaccine and recommended schedule. It is never given into a vein.

Q: Is the rabies vaccine given before or after an animal bite?

  • It can be given in both scenarios.
  • Pre-exposure prophylaxis: Given to high-risk individuals before potential exposure (e.g., certain travellers, animal handlers).
  • Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP): Given after an animal bite or suspected exposure to prevent the disease from developing. This often involves multiple doses and sometimes Rabies Immune Globulin (RIG),...

Q: How many doses of rabies vaccine are needed?

A: The number of doses depends on whether it's pre-exposure or post-exposure, and the specific vaccine schedule your doctor follows. For post-exposure, it's usually 3-5 doses over a period of weeks. It's crucial to complete the entire course as prescribed.

Q: What happens if I miss a dose of the rabies vaccine?

A: Missing a dose can affect the vaccine's effectiveness. If you miss a dose, contact your doctor immediately. They will advise you on rescheduling and whether any adjustments to the vaccination schedule are needed to ensure you develop adequate protection.

Q: Are there common side effects of the rabies vaccine?

A: Yes, common side effects are usually mild and temporary. These can include pain, redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site. Less common side effects may include headache, muscle aches, fever, or dizziness. Serious side effects are rare.

Q: Can pregnant or breastfeeding women receive the rabies vaccine?

A: Yes, rabies vaccination is considered safe and is recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women if there's a risk of exposure, especially for post-exposure prophylaxis. The benefits of preventing rabies far outweigh any potential risks.

Q: Do I need to take rabies antibodies (Rabies Immune Globulin) in addition to the vaccine?

A: After a bite or significant exposure, your doctor may prescribe Rabies Immune Globulin (RIG) in addition to the vaccine. RIG provides immediate, short-term protection (passive immunity) while your body builds its own immunity from the vaccine. This is crucial for severe exposures.

Q: Can children receive the rabies vaccine?

A: Yes, rabies vaccines are safe and effective for children of all ages, including infants, if they are at risk of exposure or have been exposed to a potentially rabid animal.

Q: Can I take Verovax R vaccine even if I have not been bitten or scratched by any rabies-infected animal?

A: Yes, you or your child can take Verovax R vaccine even if you have not been exposed to the rabies virus. This is known as pre-exposure immunisation. Your doctor will determine the best time for you or your child to receive the vaccination.

Q: Can I take Verovax R vaccine if I am taking other medicines?

A: Some medicines may interact with Verovax R vaccine and may affect how it works. Thus, you should always inform your doctor about any other medicines, including non-prescription medicines, health supplements, or herbal products that you are taking. Your doctor will recommend whether you can take Verovax R vaccine along with the other medicines that you are taking.
