Medical Description

Tryptinol 10 mg Tablet is an antidepressant. The active ingredient of this medicine is amitriptyline which belongs to the class of tricyclic antidepressants. This medicine balances the chemical substances in the brain and prevents the pain signals from reaching the brain. It is therefore used in the treatment of depression and neuropathic pain. The most common side effects associated with the use of Tryptinol 10 mg Tablet are constipation, dryness of mouth, nausea, decrease in blood pressure, palpitations, and blurred vision. Most of these side effects are mild and should not affect your day-to-day activities. However, if their severity increases or you start having suicidal thoughts, immediately consult your doctor. Tryptinol 10 mg Tablets should be taken at a dose prescribed by the doctor. It should be continued for the recommended duration. It is advisable to take the medicine at a particular time of the day to maintain the balance of the neurotransmitters. However, you should not stop taking the medicine abruptly as it can worsen your condition. The medicine usually takes 4-6 weeks or more to start having its effect. It is not advisable to use automobiles after taking Tryptinol 10 mg Tablet since it can cause drowsiness and confusion. It is not recommended to take this medicine if you have liver disease. Contraindications

If you have hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of Tryptinol 10 mg Tablet.
If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
If you have any liver disease.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

You shouldn't take Tryptinol Tablets during pregnancy or if you are planning a pregnancy. There aren't enough studies on pregnant women to know the exact effect of this medicine on the foetus. However, some studies done on animal subjects show that the medicine interferes with the development of the baby.

Breast Feeding

You should not take Tryptinol while breastfeeding. The medicine can pass into the breastmilk and cause side effects in the baby like irritability, rigidity, irregular breathing, and constipation.

Driving

Tryptinol 10 mg Tablets can cause drowsiness and blurred vision. Hence, the medicine interferes with your ability to focus. You shouldn't drive or operate any machinery while you are taking this medicine.

Alcohol

Consuming alcohol while taking Tryptinol 10 mg tablets can increase the severity of effects like drowsiness, blurred vision, disorientation, nausea, headache, and altered consciousness.

Talk to your doctor if

You have suicidal thoughts or an urge to harm yourself.
You have vision problems. If you experience tenderness, swelling, or redness in the eyes, consult your doctor immediately.
You have diabetes.
Tryptinol increases the sensitivity to sunlight. Take appropriate precautions while going out.
Tryptinol 10 mg tablets should be used with caution in the elderly population. Since, side effects can be more severe for them.

Directions for Use

Take Tryptinol Tablet exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
For optimal pharmacological effects, take the prescribed dosage of Tryptinol Tablet at the same time every day for the entire duration of treatment.
Do not discontinue the use or alter the dose of Tryptinol Tablet without consulting your physician first.
Take Tryptinol Tablet as a whole. Do not crush or break it.
Tryptinol 10 mg tablets can be taken at any time of the day (preferably at night since it causes sleepiness).

Storage and disposal

Keep Tryptinol in the packaging or container it came in. Store Tryptinol in a cool and dry place, at a temp below 30°C. Make sure that this medication is not accessible to kids or pets. An overdose of Tryptinol Tablets can cause drowsiness, altered consciousness, difficulty in breathing, cyanosis bluish discolouration of the skin), and excessive dryness of the mouth. You should consult your doctor immediately.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed a dose of Tryptinol, take it as soon as you recall. If the gap is too long, skip the dose you have missed and continue with the scheduled dose. However, do not take two doses to compensate for the missed dose.

Tryptinol 10 mg tablets act on five different neurotransmitters (chemical substances in the brain that help in signalling) to regulate mood, including serotonin, norepinephrine, histamine, and two types of transmitters that affect parasympathetic activity. Tryptinol prevents the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin, increasing their concentration at the nerve endings. Serotonin gives a sense of satisfaction, while norepinephrine increases the energy levels in the body. This medicine decreases the concentration of histamine, leading to drowsiness or sedation. It also reduces the concentration of acetylcholine at the nerve endings leading to dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Tryptinol Tablet should not be consumed with the following medicines:
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors like linezolid, isocarboxazid, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline) since the combination can cause life-threatening effects.
Anticoagulants like clopidogrel since it increases the chances of bleeding.
Medicines that cause drowsiness like antihistamines (cetirizine), anti-anxiety medicines (alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem), and analgesics (codeine)
Medicines that affect the metabolism of amitriptyline like cimetidine and antifungal (terbinafine).
Medicines that affect the heart rhythm like amiodarone, procainamide, quinidine, cisapride, and antibiotics (erythromycin).

Unless advised otherwise by the doctor, a regular diet can be continued.
