Medical Description

Tercort syrup is used for cough with mucus associated with bronchitis, asthma or emphysema, a lung condition that can make breathing difficult. It contains a combination of ambroxol, guaifenesin and terbutaline. Ambroxol and guaifenesin loosen and thin phlegm, which is mucus coughed up from the airways. Terbutaline relaxes tightened airway muscles so air can move more freely. The syrup is taken by mouth with or without food as prescribed by a doctor and is not meant to replace assessment of a persistent or unexplained cough.

Uses

  • Cough with mucus: Thick phlegm in the airways can be hard to clear; this combination loosens it and makes coughing it out easier.
  • Bronchitis-related congestion: Inflammation of the breathing tubes can trap mucus; this syrup may help clear it and improve airflow when prescribed.
  • Asthma-related mucus cough: The airway-opening ingredient terbutaline relaxes airway muscles while ambroxol and guaifenesin help clear mucus under medical supervision.
  • Emphysema-related mucus cough: In this long-term lung condition, the combination may help loosen phlegm and ease airway tightness when prescribed.

How does this medicine work?

The mucus-loosening ingredient ambroxol makes phlegm thinner and easier to move. Guaifenesin adds water to airway secretions, helping the body clear mucus through coughing. Terbutaline relaxes the muscles around narrowed airways, allowing air to move more freely.
