Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Diazepam is a benzodiazepine that acts on the brain pathways to increase the action of a chemical messenger called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) and increases its activity. This results in sedation, calming effects, and muscle relaxation, all of which contribute to decreasing the effects of anxiety. Propranolol is a Beta Blocker, which blocks the activity of the chemical messenger's epinephrine and norepinephrine on beta receptors, which are present in the heart and blood vessels. This decreases the heart's workload and acts on smooth muscle cells of various organs and blood vessels. It can cause the constriction of these vessels. It can decrease heart rate, flushing and sweating. Due to these properties, this combination of medications is instrumental in treating anxiety associated with symptoms like increased heart rate, palpitations, flushing, and increased sweating.
