Medical Description

Taxonab powder for infusion contains paclitaxel bound to human albumin as its active drug formulation. It is a prescription cancer medicine used to treat breast cancer after failure of combination chemotherapy for metastatic disease or relapse within 6 months of adjuvant chemotherapy.

Cancer cells divide rapidly. Taxonab powder for infusion contains albumin-bound paclitaxel, which disrupts the microtubules needed for cell division, thereby inhibiting cancer-cell growth and causing cell death.

Unlike conventional paclitaxel formulations, this albumin-bound formulation does not contain solvent-based excipients and generally does not require routine premedication for hypersensitivity reactions.

Trained healthcare professionals administer it by IV infusion as advised. Regular blood count and neurological monitoring are required because treatment can cause bone marrow suppression and peripheral neuropathy.

Uses

Taxonab powder for infusion is used alone or alongside other chemotherapy drugs to treat adult patients with:
  • breast cancer after failure of combination chemotherapy for metastatic disease or relapse within 6 months of adjuvant chemotherapy.

Contraindications

Taxonab powder for infusion should not be used:
  • If you have had a severe allergic reaction to paclitaxel, human albumin, or any ingredient in this medicine.
  • If your baseline white blood cell count is very low.
  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it is not an absolute contraindication, but paclitaxel may harm the fetus and should generally be avoided unless the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk.
  • If you are currently breastfeeding.

Side effects

Very Common Side Effects
  • Temporary hair loss (alopecia) on the scalp and body, which is temporary.

  • Severe peripheral neuropathy: Worsening numbness, tingling, pain, or difficulty performing normal activities.
  • Unusual Bleeding: Bleeding gums, frequent nosebleeds, or dark blood in your stool caused by very low blood platelets.
  • Severe hypersensitivity reaction: Breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, rash, dizziness, or other symptoms during or shortly after the infusion.
  • Severe blood-cell abnormalities: Marked reductions in white blood cells, platelets, or red blood cells requiring prompt medical assessment.

Directions for Use

Taxonab powder for infusion is administered only as an intravenous (IV) infusion by trained healthcare professionals in a hospital or cancer clinic.
  • Trained medical staff prepare and handle the medicine.
  • Your oncologist determines the dose based on your cancer type, treatment regimen, body surface area, and blood test results.
  • Taxonab powder for infusion should not be substituted for conventional paclitaxel formulations.
  • Do not skip or delay scheduled treatment without consulting your doctor.

Storage and disposal

  • {cb}} powder for infusion is supplied as a sterile lyophilised powder and should be stored according to the product-specific storage instructions. The product information for Abraxane states that unopened vials do not require special temperature storage conditions.
  • After reconstitution, storage conditions and duration depend on the preparation and must follow the product information and hospital protocol.
  • Hospital staff dispose of all leftover liquid, IV bags, and needles in accordance with biohazard waste procedures.
  • Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Quick Tips

  • If you develop fever, chills, or other signs of infection, call your doctor or care team immediately.
  • Report any new or worsening numbness or burning in your fingers or toes as soon as it starts so your doctor can adjust your care.
  • Attend your scheduled blood tests so that your doctor can check whether your blood counts are adequate for treatment.
  • Tell the healthcare professional immediately if you develop breathing difficulty, rash, dizziness, or other symptoms during the infusion.
  • Follow your doctor's advice regarding food safety when your blood cell counts are low.
  • Discuss fertility preservation with your doctor before treatment if you plan to have children in the future.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose is very unlikely because this drug is prepared and administered strictly by cancer specialists in a hospital setting. If an excessive dose is administered, monitor the patient closely and provide appropriate supportive care. There is no specific antidote.

Missed a Dose

If you miss your infusion appointment at the hospital or need to reschedule, contact your oncologist. Your doctor will decide when to administer the next dose.

How does this medicine work?

To divide and grow, cancer cells rely on an internal support network of tiny structures called microtubules. Paclitaxel promotes microtubule formation and stabilisation and prevents their normal breakdown. This disrupts the normal function and division of cancer cells, eventually causing cell death. The human albumin component forms albumin-bound paclitaxel nanoparticles. Albumin may facilitate paclitaxel transport across endothelial cells; however, the exact contribution of this mechanism to the drug's clinical effects is not fully established.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor about all prescription and OTC medicines, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you take.
  • Medicines affecting CYP2C8 or CYP3A4 may alter paclitaxel levels and require monitoring.
  • Other bone marrow-suppressing medicines may increase the risk of low blood counts.
  • Other medicines that cause peripheral neuropathy may increase nerve-related side effects.
  • Taxonab powder for infusion should not be substituted for or used interchangeably with other paclitaxel formulations.
  • Avoid live vaccines during significant immunosuppression unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise.

Interactions with food items

  • Because Taxonab powder for infusion is administered intravenously, food does not affect its absorption in the same way as medicines taken by mouth.
  • Avoid raw or undercooked foods and unpasteurised products when your doctor advises precautions because of low blood cell counts.
  • Try to avoid alcohol during treatment, as it can worsen nausea, dehydration, and strain on your liver.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat small, light meals to help manage stomach upset.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Hair loss is a very common side effect of Taxonab powder for infusion. The extent and duration vary between individuals.
The drug drip itself takes a relatively short time. However, you should expect to spend a few hours at the clinic for pre-treatment blood checks, health evaluations, and nursing preparation.
Tell your oncologist as soon as you feel numbness, tingling, burning, or pain, as these may indicate peripheral neuropathy. This allows your doctor to adjust your dose or pause treatment briefly to prevent long-term nerve changes.
Unlike solvent-based paclitaxel formulations, routine premedication to prevent hypersensitivity reactions is generally not required with Taxonab powder for infusion. However, your doctor may prescribe premedication when clinically appropriate.
This varies from person to person. Fatigue, low blood counts, neuropathy, and other side effects may affect your ability to work. Discuss your daily activities with your treating doctor.
