Medical Description

Sycon syrup is used to relieve acidity, heartburn, indigestion, gas and bloating, and to provide acid relief during stomach-ulcer treatment. It contains a combination of aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, which neutralise stomach acid, activated dimethicone, which helps trapped gas pass, and sorbitol solution, which draws water into the bowel. By lowering acid and reducing gas bubbles, the syrup can ease burning and pressure in the digestive tract. Sycon syrup is taken by mouth with or without food as advised; shake it well and measure it with the device supplied with the pack.

Uses

  • Acidity and heartburn: The antacid ingredients neutralise excess stomach acid and may ease the burning discomfort of acid reflux.
  • Indigestion: Sycon syrup may relieve stomach discomfort associated with excess acid and difficult digestion.
  • Gas and bloating: Activated dimethicone helps trapped gas bubbles combine so they can pass more easily and reduce pressure.
  • Stomach ulcer symptoms: Sycon syrup may provide acid relief alongside the treatment prescribed for an ulcer, but it does not heal the underlying cause alone.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Sycon syrup. Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney disease, bowel obstruction, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain or unexplained weight loss. Do not use it for prolonged symptoms without medical assessment.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide react with stomach acid and reduce its acidity. They may also form a protective layer over irritated stomach lining. Activated dimethicone changes the surface of gas bubbles, allowing them to join and pass more easily. Sorbitol solution can draw water into the bowel and support softer stools.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Sycon syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, separate it from antibiotics such as tetracyclines and quinolones, thyroid medicine, iron supplements, medicines for osteoporosis and other tablets whose absorption can be reduced by antacids. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the correct interval.

Interactions with food items

Avoid foods and drinks that clearly trigger your acidity or heartburn, such as very oily or spicy meals. Ask your doctor about alcohol because it may worsen stomach irritation and reflux.
