Medical Description

Stemfor injection contains plerixafor, a haematopoietic stem-cell mobiliser. It is used with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) to help haematopoietic (blood-forming) stem cells (HSCs) move from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. This process allows for the collection of these stem cells, which can then be used for autologous transplantation in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).

Stemfor injection blocks the CXCR4 receptor, preventing its binding with SDF-1α. This reduces signals that keep stem cells in the bone marrow, increasing their circulation in the blood.

Stemfor injection can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, which can be life-threatening. Patients should be monitored during and after administration, with appropriate treatment available for serious allergic reactions

Stemfor injection is given by subcutaneous injection (injection under the skin) as directed by your doctor. Stemfor injection mobilises cells from the bone marrow; it can increase circulating white blood cells and decrease platelet counts. It can also cause gastrointestinal effects such as diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, as well as injection-site reactions, headache, fatigue, joint pain and dizziness. Left upper abdominal pain or pain in the shoulder or shoulder-blade area requires immediate medical assessment.

Before treatment, tell your doctor if you have previously reacted to plerixafor and provide information about your medicines and health conditions. Stemfor injection can cause fetal harm so effective contraception should be discussed with your doctor.

Uses

Stemfor injection is used In combination with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) to enhance the mobilisation of haematopoietic stem cells into the peripheral blood for collection and subsequent autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

How does this medicine work?

Stemfor injection is a CXCR4 inhibitor that helps move blood-forming stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream.Stemfor injection blocks CXCR4, a protein that normally keeps stem cells inside the bone marrow. By blocking it, more stem cells, including CD34-positive stem cells, enter the blood. These cells can then be collected from the blood and used for autologous stem-cell transplantation in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).Stemfor injection is given along with G-CSF, which helps increase the number of stem cells available for collection.

Interactions
