Quick Tips

  • For emergency contraception, take Sirfek as soon as possible within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse.
  • Sirfek is more effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected intercourse.
  • If you vomit within 2 to 3 hours of taking Sirfek, contact your doctor, as you may need another dose.
  • Sirfek does not protect against sexually transmitted infections; use condoms for protection.
  • If your next period is more than a week late, unusually light, or you have any concerns, take a pregnancy test and consult your doctor.

How does this medicine work?

Sirfek mainly works by stopping or delaying the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation). It may also change the lining of the uterus and the mucus at the entrance of the womb, which can make it harder for sperm to reach or fertilise an egg. Sirfek does not work if you are already pregnant and will not affect an existing pregnancy.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are taking. Certain medicines can make Sirfek less effective, including some medicines for seizures, rifampicin (used for tuberculosis), and efavirenz (used for HIV). If you are taking any of these, ask your doctor about additional or alternative contraception, such as condoms.

Interactions with food items

No significant food interactions are known with Sirfek.
