Medical Description

Rzcv Bid 200/ Dry dry syrup is an antibiotic used for selected bacterial infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, urinary tract, skin, teeth, joints and bones. It contains a combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxycillin damages the protective wall bacteria need to survive, while clavulanic acid blocks a resistance enzyme that can otherwise break down amoxycillin. The powder is mixed with water, shaken and given by mouth with the supplied measuring device under medical advice; it does not treat viral illnesses.

Uses

  • Ear, sinus and throat infections: The combination treats selected bacterial infections in these areas when the bacteria are susceptible.
  • Lung infections: Amoxycillin kills susceptible bacteria in respiratory infections, while clavulanic acid helps it remain effective against some resistant bacteria.
  • Urinary tract infections: Rzcv Bid may be prescribed for bacterial infections affecting the urinary system when the bacteria are susceptible.
  • Skin, dental, bone and joint infections: The antibiotic combination may treat selected bacterial infections in these tissues when prescribed by a clinician.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, penicillin antibiotics or related cephalosporin antibiotics, do not use it. Do not use Rzcv Bid if you previously developed jaundice or liver problems after an amoxycillin and clavulanic acid combination. Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, glandular fever, bowel inflammation or a history of severe allergy.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotics can disturb normal bowel bacteria and cause loose stools. Contact your doctor promptly if diarrhoea is severe, persistent, watery or bloody.
  • Nausea: The combination can upset the stomach, especially around the time it is given. Seek advice if nausea prevents eating or drinking.
  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation may lead to vomiting. Contact your doctor if you cannot keep fluids or the medicine down.
  • Skin rash or hives: An itchy rash or raised welts can signal an allergy. Stop using it and get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
  • Vaginal inflammation: Changes in normal bacteria may cause soreness, itching or unusual discharge. Ask a doctor if these symptoms persist or are troublesome.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or may be pregnant. Rzcv Bid should be used during pregnancy only when prescribed after the expected benefits and possible risks have been assessed.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid can enter breast milk in small amounts. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding and report diarrhoea, rash or mouth irritation in the baby.

Driving

Driving

Rzcv Bid may rarely cause dizziness or seizures. Do not drive if you feel dizzy, confused or unwell.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific alcohol interaction is established, but alcohol may worsen nausea, dizziness or stomach upset during an infection.

Directions for Use

Dissolve the powder in sterile water exactly as directed on the pack, then shake well before each use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and do not drink directly from the bottle. Give Rzcv Bid dry syrup with or after food if advised, and complete the prescribed course unless the doctor tells you to stop. Do not self-start, share or save this antibiotic.

Storage and disposal

Keep the unopened powder in the container supplied and away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. After mixing, store the liquid exactly as directed on the pack and do not use it after the stated storage period or expiry date. Shake well before use, keep it out of children's reach and dispose of leftover liquid according to local guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Shake Rzcv Bid dry syrup well before every use and measure it with the supplied device.
  • Give it with food if advised, which may make stomach upset less likely.
  • Complete the prescribed antibiotic course unless your doctor tells you to stop.
  • Encourage fluids if diarrhoea occurs, unless fluid restriction has been advised.
  • Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, severe rash or persistent watery or bloody diarrhoea.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much Rzcv Bid dry syrup may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain or seizures, with greater risk of complications in kidney disease. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The combination targets bacteria rather than viruses. In the bacterial cell, amoxycillin prevents formation of the protective wall needed for survival. Clavulanic acid blocks a bacterial enzyme that can destroy amoxycillin, allowing the antibiotic to work against some resistant bacteria.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Rzcv Bid dry syrup works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention warfarin or another blood thinner, methotrexate, allopurinol, probenecid, another antibiotic, and hormonal contraception. Probenecid can increase amoxycillin levels, allopurinol may increase the chance of a rash, and methotrexate clearance or blood thinner effects can change. Vomiting or severe diarrhoea can reduce the reliability of hormonal contraception.

Interactions with food items

Giving Rzcv Bid dry syrup with food may lessen stomach upset and improve tolerance. Follow the preparation and food instructions provided by your doctor or the pack.
