Medical Description

Rusiron-O tablet is used to prevent or correct iron deficiency anaemia, including nutritional anaemia during pregnancy or breastfeeding when advised by a doctor. It contains a combination of ferrous ascorbate, a form of iron, and folic acid, also called vitamin B9. Iron supplies the material needed to make haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, while folic acid supports healthy new blood-cell formation. Rusiron-O tablet is taken by mouth with sufficient water, usually after food as advised.

Uses

  • Iron deficiency anaemia: Low iron can reduce oxygen delivery and cause tiredness or weakness; this product restores iron and folic acid needed for healthy blood formation.
  • Low iron intake: Replaces iron when the diet does not provide enough to support normal red blood cell production.
  • Iron loss from ongoing bleeding: Helps rebuild iron stores when chronic blood loss has reduced the body's available iron, under medical supervision.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding nutritional needs: Iron and folic acid support increased blood-forming needs during these periods when prescribed.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Rusiron-O tablet. Do not use iron supplements for anaemia not caused by iron deficiency unless your doctor advises. Tell your doctor if you have iron overload, repeated blood transfusions, a blood, stomach or bowel condition, or difficulty absorbing nutrients.

Side effects

  • Constipation: Unabsorbed iron can make stools harder or less frequent. Drink enough water and eat fibre-rich food; seek advice for severe abdominal pain or several days without a bowel movement.
  • Nausea: Iron may irritate the stomach, especially when treatment starts. Taking Rusiron-O tablet after food may help if your doctor allows it.
  • Stomach upset: Cramping, indigestion or discomfort can occur as iron passes through the digestive system. Report persistent or severe symptoms.
  • Dark stools: Iron commonly makes stools dark because some of the mineral remains unabsorbed. Seek urgent advice if stools are black and tarry with weakness or dizziness.

Rusiron-O tablet may be prescribed during pregnancy when iron and folic acid are needed. Use it only as advised by your doctor and tell them about all other supplements you take.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Iron and folic acid are commonly used when breastfeeding, but take Rusiron-O tablet only after discussing it with your doctor. Tell them if the baby has any health concerns.

Driving

Driving

Rusiron-O tablet is not expected to affect driving. Do not drive if nausea, dizziness or weakness makes you feel unsafe.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific alcohol interaction is established, but ask your doctor if you drink alcohol regularly or have a blood, stomach or liver condition.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Take Rusiron-O tablet after food if advised. Do not chew, crush or break it unless your doctor tells you to. Use only under medical advice, particularly during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Storage and disposal

Keep Rusiron-O tablet in its original container, tightly closed, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of the reach of children because accidental iron exposure can be dangerous. Do not use it after the expiry date. Ask a pharmacist about disposal.

Quick Tips

  • Keep Rusiron-O tablet away from children and never share it with another person.
  • Dark stools can occur with iron, but report black tarry stools with weakness or dizziness.
  • Ask before combining it with another iron, folic acid or mineral supplement.
  • Tell your doctor about thyroid medicines, antibiotics, antacids and calcium products.
  • Continue iron-rich foods such as pulses, leafy vegetables and meat if suitable for your diet.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much iron can cause severe stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, drowsiness or collapse, especially in children. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ferrous ascorbate supplies iron for haemoglobin and red blood cell formation. Folic acid supports the production and normal development of new blood cells. Together, they help correct nutritional shortages that can contribute to anaemia.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Rusiron-O tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, antacids and acid-reducing medicines can lower iron absorption, while iron can lower absorption of thyroid medicines, some antibiotics and certain medicines for weak bones. Calcium-containing products may also reduce iron absorption, so ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate them.

Interactions with food items

Tea, coffee, milk, dairy products and calcium-rich foods can reduce iron absorption. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to space them from Rusiron-O tablet. Taking it after food may reduce stomach upset.
