  • Gut infections

Contraindications

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rifaximin, metronidazole, or any other ingredient of this medicine. Do not take it if you have used disulfiram, a medicine for alcohol dependence, in the last two weeks, as the combination can cause severe confusion or a psychotic reaction. Avoid alcohol while taking it and for a couple of days after finishing, as the mix can cause a strong reaction with flushing, nausea, and a fast heartbeat. How does this medicine work?

This medicine brings together two antibiotics that act inside the digestive tract. rifaximin stays mainly in the gut and stops the harmful bacteria there from growing and multiplying. metronidazole tackles other germs, including certain bacteria and parasites that thrive without oxygen. By clearing these germs, the two together help settle the infection and reduce loose motions.

Interactions

In particular, let them know if you are taking blood-thinning medicines, medicines for fits, or lithium, as these may need closer monitoring.

Interactions with food items

Do not drink alcohol during treatment and for two days after your last dose, as combining the two can cause an unpleasant reaction with flushing, nausea, stomach cramps, and a racing heartbeat.
